Pretty sure the only reason this clip lives in infamy is they built it up all week long, and as a result set certain folks expectations WAY beyond what the reality was. If they'd just pulled the trigger and no one expected it, I feel like this would have gone down differently in how it was taken.
Also, apparently she hurt herself on the jump because of how the setup was constructed and what she expected to be soft was actually quite hard on the bottom and she was in lots of pain. (If my memory recalls correctly)
Still could have been better, but that's true of 90% of any Film/TV scenes
Not her fault. Oliva is a damn fine actress and she was up to play. B+/A-
Update: Found a full compilation wtth BTS footage of her afterwards. (She got fully covered, just not her face)
I remember the train-wreck this turned into at the time, that was quite something. ISTR she had people harassing her on social media afterwards about how it should have been done, some folk took it way too seriously, unless that was a dfifferent incident.
From my POV what was disappointing was the skimpy outfit she wore, earlier in the hype for it she'd posed in a different one, still a much nicer and non-skimpy maid's dress, that would have looked utterly awesome getting covered in gloop - but of course it wasn't being shot for the WAM gaze, so they went with what would get better ratings from the general audience.
And they absolutely should have had padding under the pool if someone was going to jump into it, or instructed her to go in feet first and then sit / lie down, rather than landing on her knees.

This clip lives in infamy with me as well, because she played the wam fans big time by promising to "dive" into the mess if a certain number of votes were received, and when the vote tally was reached she backed out and did not actually "dive" but merely flopped onto her knees and kept her face clean, so it was widely criticized as a "fail" and a broken promise on her pledge.
The reason this clip will always be infamous with me, is that I was the first one to post the clip on my old Youtube channel dedicated to wam tv clips, and when I posted the clip many wam fans posted critical comments about her failure that all negative comments caused Olivia and her production company to file a complaint against me to Youtube, and then Youtube not only deleted the clip, they promptly deleted my entire channel with over 500 wam clips on it.
So much for free speech, i.e. you hold a fundraiser and make a pledge, then you fail to deliver on your pledge, and when many wam fans criticize you for failing, then your channel gets accused of bullying and then Youtube shuts down the entire channel.
This is why I do not post tv clips on YT these days.
I dunno why the community was so angry about this. Sexy outfit, full coverage submersion, great attitude to the mess. Kevin Pereira really gave us some hot wank material that day.

Oh wow, that sucks. I didn't realize you'd been directly effected by the disappointed backlash. Such a shame. You were/are one of the only ones archiving TV clips then and now. Sorry that happened.

Yep, always mystified by the petulant, spoilt brat entitlement that this (actually great, by mainstream standards) clip has elicited over the past decade+.

People were expecting a faceplant and they didn't get a faceplant
It was a big deal back in the day though. Almost a top 5 controversy.
God, I remember this...and the amount of vitriol that was spewed on the forums at the time. I never understood what the uproar was about, possibly because even though I had a gorgeous Olivia Munn in a vinyl maid's outfit jumping into a giant pit of chocolate pudding and cool whip, I also had to look at Kevin Pereira's idiot face and then he had to go and jump in it with her, which kinda ruined it for me. So maybe I just wasn't as broken up about it as everyone else.

Are we talking about the late, not great and NOT lamented cable channel G4TV.... which went on a petulant, spoiled-brat mission against the entire WAM community in the wake of the whole Olivia Munn debacle? Because that might be responsible for a FEW of the bad vibes.... (Along with the insane amount of hype, the crushing cop-out on Munn's part, the way the scene weirdly pivoted into male WAM, and of course Olivia ranting against WAMmers on social media afterwards...)
I mean, if you weren't there on the ground, you can't really comment. Yes, there was a moment in time when the social media landscape was small enough that a few (vocal) fans in a niche fetish could incur the wrath of a (very small, very shitty) cable network. It was... deeply strange. But also kinda amazing, given that WAM is basically a non-factor now even among other sexual fetishes. (And the idea that a mainstream show would actually give the appearance of catering to WAM, as G4TV did during that entire week.... Not remotely fathomable now.)
Anyway. It was kinda bizarre and also annoying to see G4TV use one of my clips (without permission) in a weird takedown of my own fetish (apparently we get turned on by seeing women eat pies?!?)... But that was also a looooong time ago. Olivia married up and she's a long way from being trolled by angry WAMmers, so good for her!!
Let me just say, categorically, "total coverage" that does not include the face is not total coverage. Especially when the dude basically belly-flops in.
It's fine if this clip checks all the boxes for you, but for how much of this site is about "pies in the face," it feels a little bit weird that people are flummoxed as to how this clip can be disappointing when, quite obviously, there is pie and there is face but they do not meet.
Does that mean people should harass, bully, harangue, etc? No. But c'mon, for a healthy swath of the population here, it is blindingly apparent why this clip would be frustrating.

I agree. Here's a clip from when Andi Peters kissed a plasma TV screen, then discovered that it was very hot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrDTSLtWqws The key point is that he didn't scream, or swear, or sprint off to the bathroom. I.e. he showed a lot of self-control because this was live TV, and I think Olivia Munn did the same.
Related to that, I understand why people were disappointed, but if she had dived in and then face-planted onto a concrete floor, she could have been seriously hurt. There might even be a drowning risk at that point, depending on how long it took for other people to realise that she was in trouble.

You might be right! A literal dive probably would have gone poorly. A belly-flop would have been epic similar to how the dude goes in, but I seem to remember a New Year's Eve dunk tank clip where she seemed pretty unhappy to be there and landed such that she avoided getting totally submerged, so knowing she doesn't seem to care for this type of thing, it was probably out of the question to begin with. Less than ideal as a WAM fan...if she had fully dived/flopped/whatever safely, the resulting clip might've been my all time favorite mainstream clip. Oh well!
I guess the basic problem with this was that although it was deliberately teased to the WAM audience, it was still a mainstream scene being done by people who weren't wammers. Had they actually consulted people with wam experience, then things like putting padding under the "pie" to cushion her landing, and how important face coverage is to a percentage of the audience, would have been taken more into consideration. But regardless of scene faults, some of what followed really was out of line.
As I've said before, almost nothing mainstream TV produces will ever match what an actual WAM producer can shoot, simply because mainstream TV doesn't fully "get" what wam, from the fetish perspective, is all about.
