Hi guys! I'm thinking of trying out emulation paint I have some really old stuff laying around but I'm not sure if it's safe anyone know if it is or what to avoid ? Thanks guys
If it's water based vinyl matt or contract and you don't usually have any problems with skin irritation then it's probably alright. The fact that it's old shouldn't matter. At your own risk though.
NB: If you're worried about lead etc. those paints were always solvent borne and you shouldn't ever be using those anyway.
I'm going to go with recommending tempra paint instead. Relatively cheap and easy to find. The paint you have may have water as a binder, but it may have other components and the pigments used may not necessarily be non-toxic. Some (cadmium, for example) absorb through being breathed in while others do so through ingestion or skin contact. Lead is nowhere near the only thing to worry about.
Is IT, honestly not really, but you take risk crossing the street. In my teens and early 20s I used latex house paint, emulsion , water based what ever you want to call it a lot. At first the excitement, lust and smooth feeling was great. Then after orgasm, why? this is kinda gross. Chemical plastic solvent smells. After orgasm then sensation of poison set in after continued use. A lingering dull lack of energy resides for a few days after. SO I would keep it occasional. It was FUN and LOved most of it, but the ride aint for free, baby!
I am a technical curios person by nature in biology, mechanical and technical things. So I wanted to understand paint. Emulsion paint is of course water based and propylene glycol. PG is used in cosmetic products, lotions, heating and cooling systems because of high thermal capacity and resist freezing. It is also in e juice for vape or e-cigs. The liver can metabolize it and no harm done, although there is only so much bullshit our livers can take day to day. Ethylene Glycol on the other hand in automotive antifreeze will kill ya by the liver. One carbon atom less and death results.
There are other "Proprietary" ingredients in paint that are harmful. One chemical is the one used in the oil dispersants during the Gulf oil spill. There are other drying agents and solvents in the area of VOC's, volatile organic compounds. Don't confuse the name, in chemistry it means the molecules only contain carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Toluene is an example of a VOC. Some of these VOC in paints may be chlorinated, being very toxic to neurological, liver kidneys, bladder. Example chloroform or trichloro ethylene or TCE. Google TCE, wonder in what it can do as a tool but horribly toxic
Because any water based paint "system" is going to have a biological problem that must be addressed with preservative additive. PG or propylene glycol handles microbial. Fungal growth is managed by some Mercury based fungicides. Even non mercury Fungicides are Extremely toxic to mammalian life.
there is also formaldehyde
ANNY of these things and more can be in that paint that is absorbed through your lungs and skin. Even "NON-TOXIC" water based paint must have a preservative. They use chemicals that are non toxic but DECAY in TO Formaldehydes. Yes there are better ways but industry does it because people buy it and are to lazy to ask a few simple questions. In Europe many of these things are NOT tolerated.
I got more of a bad reaction to tempera paint than house paint. I don't regret what I've done, however would not engage in that play again and have grown out of those desires. Last year I did it good one last time. I do care for my health and diet so a compromise can be managed.
I still love metallic paint. I feel safer with that because the pigment powder is contained in a vegetable oil of your choice. However it is a metal powder. So avoid breathing dust when mixing. Once mixed it is relatively inert. yet there may be risk. I have tamed down on my desires for that cause new things in my life. We grow.
If you are a relatively healthy individual have fun consciously. I would not want to see women do something I wouldn't do myself. And if you drink a coke a day its just like fuckin cigarettes it will just kill you in a different way. Taking junk out of diet really gives more energy and clear thought, you look back and say how did I ever get by.
