This is where my love of gorgeous girls getting gunged came from, the two most memkorable for me being Anthea Turner and Anneka Rice (two presenters at the time who i always dreamed would get gunged at some point- thank you Noel Edmonds)

That first one is Annabel Giles, not Annabel Croft. There's a much better version available, which includes some footage of the set up and some much nicer high quality close ups of her. I've always loved the clip - great set up and she was gorgeous here.

Would love to see a good quality clip again of Anneka being sent on the trip round the house by Mr Blobby. Minus the sound, I used to have a good one of it from wammonkey.com which was far better than this version currently on youtube. Anyone able to help out?

I remember that one... my VCR was broken so couldn't do anything, but it was interesting, as troughout that 1hr show, there was someone constantly being gunged after Anneka Rice was originally gunged, cleverly made out to be Anneka throughout the show. Wonder who that was, a paid member of the audience, a member of the produciton crew, or was it actually Anneka??? We will never know

This is as good a place as any to pose the following question:

As an American, can someone please tell me what this show is all about? I have obviously seen these clips for years as a wammer, but what is the whole idea of this show? Is there some kind of context?

Can one of our fellow British UMD'ers give me a quick synopsis of what in the sheer hell is going on with this show?

These clips have been up for a while. Never get bored of them, love the NHP style gungings. BUT I'm sure there are more unseen NHP clips out there somewhere. Would love to know...

Where would you start? A guy who lives in mansion in a made up village called Crinkley Bottom, with a pink and yellow cartoon character called Mr Blobby, regular celebrity visitors, topical jokes and a whole bunch of game show type stuff, hidden camera pranks and of course the gunge filled reason we all watched!

I think it would be safe to say there is no easy way of explaining this show, it was truly unique for it's craziness...maybe we should ask someone who can explain the off side rule?

I'm a Kiwi, however we got this show in NZ and it was fairly popular. Former British Radio DJ Noel Edmonds hosted a comedy/variety series in which he pretended that he was the owner of large mansion (in reality a very elaborate set in a BBC television studio) in a fictitious area of the UK. The show was made up of different segments, with arguably the most popular being the Gunge Tank. Originally unwitting members of the public were brought on the show as a result of someone writing a letter to the programme complaining about said person's behaviour in some respect and asking that they be paid back somehow. For example, in the very first show a Mother wrote in complaining about the amount of money her daughter had spent/wasted on hair products/accessories and visits to the Hairdresser over the years; the daughter was subsequently gunged.

The gunge segment was updated every year and the process became more elaborate - in the second year foam rose up from the bottom of the tank and covered the victim's body up to their neck; in the final years a special rail car was developed that took the victim on a trip around the exterior of the mansion set.

Lets not forget that Noel's House Party was the much improved and bigger budget sequel to the original show that brought us the gungetank, yes, i'm refering to Noel's Saturday Roadshow. These shows were the highlight of a Saturday night's entertainment in the late 80's and throughout the 90's, the show the featured before NHP was Jim Davidson's Generation Game, where there was an occasional custard pie in the face, or a gunging of someone
