Some days ago I tried Natrosol Gunge for the first time. In all gungings before I've used Standard MS Gunge, which I never had problems with. So I gunged with green Natrosol in the shower, wearing a white soccer jersey + shorts and a neoprene suit underneath. Gunging was fun and I really like Natrosol, BUT after washing all the clothes multiple times directly after the gunging I discovered, the jersey is now stained slightly green. Also the flocking of the sponsor on the jersey went apart and the glue pads on the neoprene suit are visibly affected and are also dissolving.
Now I need your help and advice, did someone experienced something similar or whats the point here? I didnt think I did something wrong cause I did everything like I would do with MS Gunge.
I had a session with a friend once who generously provided a ridiculous amount of "real" gunge (the UK style). I don't know exactly what kind (e.g., natrosol, methylcellulose, etc.) or where it came from. I noticed some hours after the session that the part of my phone case at the bottom, which I probably touched with a gungey hand at the end of the session, had dissolved/deformed/"melted" a little bit.
My theory is that a plasticizer of some sort did it, and I've always wondered whether it was something in the gunge. It could have been something else also - perhaps something my phone touched like the cupholder in the rental car I was driving. Supposedly Natrosol is not a plasticizer itself. It didn't seem to affect the plastic pool we were having fun in, but maybe it was a weird reaction with the particular kind of plastic or rubber that my phone case is made of. it's something I've been curious about, but I didn't think much of it until you posted this thread. So maybe there is something to it, but I'll confess this is some very anecdotal evidence at best.
Vanish White has helped me with a slightly green kit after gunging. Perhaps putting the kit in a bucket of warm water mixed with a scoop of Vanish for a few hours. Then a regular laundry cycle. It mostly worked so far for me.
For the issue of dissolving glue seams, I have not experienced this with natrasol. I did experience this when using a mess that contained oil though.
The type of gunge or gunge itself won't affect the staining, that would be down to the colouring and quantity of colouring used.
We use children's powder paint in our gunge and use a reasonable quantity to get the solid colouring people want. Although it shouldn't stain, it can if there is a lot of colouring in the gunge. Our deluxe xanthan gunge does create a more creamy and opaque gunge without using so much colouring.
In over 15 years of filming though most outfits were trashed after a shoot or film. It's probably unrealistic to do a session then wash the outfit for a Friday night out.
I've never known any gunge affect plastic or stitching. Likewise, in over 15 years and using around 20 different types we've never seen an issue. The only issue may be that the gunge drys into the stitching and the force of washing it out may affect it. The gunge itself should.
