So, my wife and her best friend have agreed to a bikini mud wrestling contest in our backyard in the next few weeks. I've posted pics of my wife messy on here before. I'm having difficulty figuring out the best mud mix. Online sources say that sodium bentonite is perfect, especially when mixed with kaolin clay. I've found the bentonite on Amazon but getting 100lbs shipped is going to be expensive. There must be a simple solution for producing some kind of smooth, grey, thick mud (similar to the stuff on AllWam). Can anyone give me any advice/direction/help?
I do get my bentonite and kaoline from CeramicPottery suppliers. There must be one within a couple of hours drive from your place. With 100lbs of Bentonite you are going to have like 6-9inches of mud in a normal sized inflatable pool make sure you prepare your mud couple hours ahead because the bentonite will keep soaking water for a long time, so you just have to keep adding water and the mud will continu to build up without getting too watery. Bentonite is somewhat white transparent by itself.. so adding Kaolyne is going to make it look better.
One last thing.. wear something over your face like a mask when you start mixing it in.. you dont want that very thin dust on your lungs.. once its wet it's perfectly safe.. you just dont want to breath the dust.
Not sure where u live, but if ur in the US and not in a large city/ metropolitan area. Find your nearest Co-Op, or similar farm supply store. Perhaps even a landscaping supply store. I get mine from a local Co-Op, but have also gotten some from a landscaping supply store. Used for lining ponds, plugging leaks in ponds, etc. I get food grade in 50lb bags from the Co-Op it mixes better. Hope this helps!
OK, so I've located a supplier and got a 5lb bag to experiment with. I'm having trouble getting a smooth consistency - any suggestions on how to add the water and/or mix it to achieve that smoothness?
Do you have an industrial mixer? That can help to avoid clumping. Also, as wam_guevara said, bentonite takes a long time to fully hydrate. Maybe let it sit for a day or two and see if it naturally smoothes out?
