I've been gunged with pretty much everything I have ever wanted to be gunged with, and a few things that I never did and never will again!
Don't get me wrong, there are still plenty of sploshy experiences I am longing for/waiting for/trying like mad to organise.
But...one thing that i'd like to try more of is proper mud. When the weather is hot and I am stuck in work, I get to fantasising about lakes of thick, smooth, clay-ish, gloopy, gloppy nutella-like mud. I'd love to give it a go.
A really nice guy and literal gunge expert on here once talked to me about a quarry where i wanna visit with him this summer.
Just wondering...does anyone know any good spots that are gungy, safe, secluded enough for fun but easy enough to get to? Anywhere near Sheffield? I run in the peaks a bit & could easily pack a towel.
Good mudding spots are as rare as rocking horse shit. There is a 'mud map' linked on here which displays some mudding holes, but has its limitations. It might be a good start.
In general be prepared to go off path; if its easy to get to it isn't private and if you want private it wont be easy to find (or literally be private land ... don't get caught)
The other side of the coin is making sure the mud is clean enough to use- as in not contaminated by dog walkers/farm animals/litter/stagnant, or in a heavily wooded area where it'll be full of sticks.
You'll probably want some water nearby too to wash off.
Between these 3 conditions, I know of 1 shallow seasonal spot that ticks all the boxes, 1 private mud patch with no wash off, and possibly 2 pits with minimal/no privacy at any time of day/night.
All the other locations I've check out fail on lack of mud (very shallow), contaminated with sticks/litter, stagnant and stinking, fully overgrown with plants, or too publically open.
The professional scenes you find on here are either; filmed on wide mud banks - these look like tidal/estuary muds. Can be a good option, but not as private. Granted you could say mudbathing is good for the skin, but that excuse will depend on what you're wearing and doing at the time. Be wary of tides, steep sides/deep mud, and sharp stones etc buried in the mud.
or filmed in secluded mud holes - these can occur naturally but are quite rare, and suitable ones are even rarer. If you're willing to do the digging you can build one yourself.
The other option is quarry mud- more privacy than the tidal flats (outside of work hours) but with the risks of sneaking into an active quarry.
Thank you. About ten years ago I was a few hours outside Vegas (maybe Nevada, maybe AZ) and came past a huge sign advertising mud fun. Can't remember the exact name of it and I was wuth non-gungy friends so couldn't swing off to check it out...it genuinely seemed with the 'sploshy' type face to be advertising somewhere to go and play in thick gungy mud. I've always wondered/fantasised what the hell was going on there....
