Is there an alternative to mud (similar look and feel) that can be used in a wam session? I'm moving into a new apartment alone for the first time and wanted to experiment - however I don't want to use clay since I will need to wash things off down the drain later and don't want to risk clogging it (or is clay safe to rinse off provided I run the shower like mad)?

It's awful. The consistency is very runny and the liquid itself is translucent. It's pretty much a dark brown slime. You're on the money for cake mix. If you use chocolate or Devil's Food flavored ones, you get the proper consistency, texture, and proper opaque coverage that mud provides. Cake mix also adds the bonus of being edible, being a very easy cleanup, and having a sweet smell.
Depending on the consistency of the "mud" you're looking for, both cake batter or pudding can make suitable alternatives, and both wash down the drain with relative ease (especially pudding).
