I actually think this is strangely important to me. If the scene has some sort of plot to it then filming in the middle of a room or in a bath can ruin the immersion. A simple colour backdrop is usually the safest option as it doesn't bring attention away from the model. Generally a backdrop looks more professional and improves the overall quality of the scene too.

My first choice is the room itself. I guess it harkens back to [that show we all remember from the 80s] where they got slimed/watered at the kitchen table, in bed, at the restaurant, and so on. Like it didn't matter what a mess it would make or how inconvenient it would be - if you said the words, you had to be punished right there and then. (That's the same reason why I love seeing accessories like glasses and jewelry and especially headphones get slimed.)
But of course in reality that's a huge clusterfuck to clean up, so my practical choice would be a solid color background.
We have an actual gunge dungeon, so I voted for The Room, but it does depend on exactly what is being done, mud usually looks best outdoors, while wetlook in a lovely natural setting can be glorious, but can also work very well in a studio.
