I saw this episode tonight too (for the first time). It was one of the pie fights I'd always wanted to see. Thanks to those in the old thread for posting and chatting about it!
There's truly some great pieings here for fans of female and male pies both. Great moment when the gal in the yellow sweater (Laraine Stephens) says "Oh Susan!" and gets her own pie right in the face.
There was a little feature in TV Guide about the filming of that scene, and it claimed that both Susan Oliver and Alan Sues, who were not scripted to take a pie during the actual filming, playfully took "a taste of the action" after the scene was done. Sadly, no outtake footage or stills of this have ever surfaced.
The TV Guide article included a still of Sues pied, but not Oliver.
This was an important early WAM scene for me. I didn't normally watch the show, but the TV Guide article alerted me, and I made sure to catch the summer rerun. (No home video back in the Dark Ages, nor YouTube.)
There was also a very short feature right before it, in which a blonde bimbo (wearing what would become known as Daisy Dukes) staffing a pie sales table keeps shoving pies in a yokel's face, until he gets one he likes. Unfortunately, she stays clean, but back in the Dark Ages, we had to develop our imaginations.
Yes, this sketch (and the short teaser "pie booth' scene before it) made a bog impact on me when I was a kid.
It would be great to find some outtakes or stills from this scene (probably destroyed/lost), mainly because of the hit on Susan Howard -- if you watch closely -- you can tell that the 'hit' was edited...we see the guy winding up with the pie, then a jump cut to the hit (pushed pie) on Susan, who is already falling backwards, being caught by the two guys....I'm guessing that the original hit knocked her backwards and/or was not so good because of this...so, they did a good 'smush' hit' and then jumped (cut) to that hit (already accomplished) in the final edit.
Knocking a model/actress off balance with a pie too forcefully applied is not an uncommon occurrance in staging slapstick scenes.
Yeah...I recorded the entire episode from Decades TV on my DVR, and I have a digital antenna on my roof so I could get the best signal from Decades (cos that channel is not on cable in my area). Decades TV broadcast a first class mastertape from 35mm film elements so this is the best quality version anybody has seen and is several times times sharper and with crisper colors than the youtube version or prior VHS recordings I had of that scene.
I am a bit leery of posting stuff to my Youtube channel right now, cos they have already issued me 2 warning notices for posting tv clips they later told me to take down due to complaints from a tv company, and they have told me if I get 1 more notice in the next 6 months then they will delete my entire Youtube channel, so for now I am not posting tv clips to Youtube until my 6 month suspended sentence is over...ha ha. I see from this thread that several others also saw the new Decades TV version so I will let them post it instead, but if nobody posts it in the next month or so then I will upload the entire episode (that Lenny wants to see) to a file locker site.
I'm def interested in seeing a much better quality version of this clip. That yellow top/leather skirt outfit is SO cute! Good catch to all involved here!
