Hi! Can anyone recommend any muddy spots outside Chicagoland? I was thinking Starved Rock down in Ottawa but I don't know where the muddy places would be there. Looking to go deep, fully dressed. Thanks!
It used to be so easy to find places but theyve built up the area where I live. Additionally, I dont want to get busted for trespassing. I found a forest preserve in Oswego Ill try out.
I know the spot near starved rock that you are referring to. I used to go there back in the late 2000s. It was alongside some railroad tracks with a large clay deposit/pond. Not sure if it's still as good as it was back then but that was my go to spot for deep clay sinking.
That's perfect. Just enough for me to explore and sink into. Hopefully there isnt much train traffic. I havent gotten fully covered since I lived in Texas. I used to go to this motocross park outside Dallas. Very muddy. Lots of pits. Id go when there wouldnt be anyone in the park so I can have some privacy. Then they closed the park. I miss that place. This spot near Ottawa sounds enticing. Thank you!
In my experiences there I only ever saw a train come by once. It was a freight train and the conductor gave us a toot while we sat along side the tracks coated in clay. I definitely miss that spot for sure.
Clean up was somewhat challenging but doable with a few towels. The clay leads out to a fresh water pond and if you walk along the edge of the clay after rinsing up you can get back to dry land with just some muddy feet. Bring a jug of water to rinse them off at the car.
Hey I'm looking for the same! I haven't found anything except a mud volleyball tournament each year in Roscoe, Illinois. I went there once; got there very early the next morning and the local park district was busy with a tractor covering all the muddy areas. I wasn't able to enjoy it, and it's not very private.
Please post your findings on here so I can enjoy the clay mud too!
