I've been a *nix geek for a long time now... cut my teeth on OpenBSD 2.8 and then did a lot of linux stuff. I had an AIX class paid for and now I'm getting to learn that. It kinda feels more BSD-like but is definitely its own kind of beast. I wasn't super excited about it at first, but its one more thing to add to the resume and I'm also getting paid to be in the class so I guess I cant complain all that much. Anybody else had any experience with this beast of an operating system?
No experience in any commercial Unix myself. AIX is pretty much the "last man standing" and even IBM doesn't spend much on maintenance or marketing these days. Like Cobol, that means it's probably a good money maker for those who can still wrangle it as the old gray ponytails retire and die off. Seems like it's only used by Fortune 100 companies now, and we all know they have deep pockets
Maintaining still-useful/still-used old technologies can be rewarding. In the last 5 years, I have dived back into vacuum tube tech and can now design, build, and repair audio circuits from scratch again just like the days of my youth There's still a pretty good market in boutique guitar amps and audiophile stereo stuff.
Yeah I work with Enterprise Red Hat every day. Principle Security Engineer for a huge Health Care company. Almost every security device we have runs Linux/Unix in the background.
A vast majority of my job is RHEL or Oracle Linux. Based on all the casual research I did before starting indicates that soundguy is right on the mark as far as fortune 100 companies. It seems that SAP Hana is super optimized for it. Some of the machines that run AIX are bonkers. It only runs on proprietary IBM power architecture (formerly power pc) and some of the machines have 64 cpus and multiple terabytes of ram.
Soundguy I love those new and old tube amps, the sound they produce reminds me of my teen years, leaky motorcycles, boobs and Black Sabbath LOL
MessyHot, I am also with Soundguy on this one, AIX and Sol are dinosaurs, but you are in a good place for $100K a year jobs for a lifetime, Red Hat is never going away. We are actually a fortune 5 company and sure most employees have a windows laptop, but I would guess we have very very few windows servers on the back end.
You are not like any other younger hot girl I have ever met! How the hell did you get interested in Linux/Unix? I actually wish there were more younger women in tech, my boss's boss is such a woman, probably in her 40's now, but a Sr Director and pulling in close to $250K a year + bennies. Cool lady too, she is still learning, recently did her CISSP.
I do see a few more younger women in tech, was at BlackHat a few years ago in Vegas and then DefCon. Most Hacker types I know are out there on the edge, Pink hair, lots of tats and piercings... I have a few tat's myself (PIC). But now I see a few women hackers, perhaps this is a trend? Perhaps our choice of profession has had an effect on our 'edgy' lifestyle and sexual preferences? Maybe we are just wired differently? One of these days you guys will have to come down to the beach for long party weekend once my new Mud Pit is built? Memories of the old days Soundguy?
Probably not like any other younger hot girl because I'm not My avatar is two of the more prolific models in the MessyHot family. I'm Clix, the photographer behind the project. I haven't touched Solaris in ages. I used to pick up discount Sparc machines from Arizona State University Surplus store so that I could explore alternate architecture. From the looks of things it will probably go away before AIX does.
I haven't been to a defcon in ages... I think my first was Defcon 8. I actually managed to get asked not to return to defcon for a little while because I was one half of the duo responsible for bringing haXXXor to life and we had a vendor presence for a couple of years before they decided hacker porn wasn't quite what they wanted at the conference lol.
I'm definitely on the outer fringe as far as looks go. neon hair, loads of tattoos and piercings, subdermal implants and all that other good stuff. One of the things that's made me happy about working in the tech industry has been that most places almost, like you said, expect us to be a little on the unusual side appearance-wise.
You're in Florida right Phil? I think we may have talked about collaborating on some stuff at one point but its been a while. Several of the messyhot models are in west palm, Hollywood, Miami, and some all of the way up to Orlando. I'm based in Arizona but make it down there to work with them pretty often.
LOL well that makes a lot more sense now, wow for a moment there that you had boobies Nice to meet you Clix.
Yeah, the security side of the house has always been a bit 'edgy' and yes its mostly accepted. Although I did find out no to long ago the really big corporations do monitor employee social media, so I have nothing in my own name. I go under my gaming name of James T. Kremmen.
Well WP, Hollywood and MIA are all less than 2 hours away from the beach house, even Orlando is about 2 hours away. I have a condo in Miami too (79th st) but I love it up here, miles and miles on empty beach just 5 mins walk from my front door. I did like just buy this place tho, so it will be a while before I get the new pit built, there is also a 'Florida' room that good for 'other' messy shoots.
Been thinking real hard about producing again, I miss it. Although I am more on the porn side of the house more so than most producers on the UMD, In fact I think I was the first to shoot Muddy Porn. Yes we should indeed get together in the future, I will keep you posted on the construction.
I've often said I like creating content that blurs the lines between art and porn. A large part of my creative endeavors have been about making people question what they see. Since you're a security guy you'll probably appreciate this.. archive.org has the entire ISO of our original release of haXXXor available. Looking back it's a little cringe-worthy now but we had great fun with it. I still have a few shrink wrapped copies of the DVDs for collectability sake
