I just heard some sad news: Actress Judy Carne has died. She is best remembered for being the "Sock it to Me" girl on ROWAN AND MARTIN'S LAUGH-IN, in the late 60's. Every week, she would have it "socked to her"--and that usually meant getting drenched with water! In fact, seeing this was one of the things that fueled my interest in WAM. RIP, Judy.
Regis said: No, alas, the site claiming it was a hoax was, in fact, a site notorious for perpetuating hoaxes.
Carne's NY Times obit offers this tidbit:
Ms. Carne left "Laugh-In" in 1970. The sock-it-to-me label had become trying to live with, she said; people would douse her with water on the street.
I think we all know what sort of person was responsible for THAT, hmmm?
I had read that years ago, about people throwing water on Judy when she was out in public. SMH. I never understood that. Did they somehow think that *pleased* her as a form of recognition?
One thing this points out is, before the internet, there were the same kind of socially inept people as those who post weird things. People who couldn't distinguish between an actress's real life persona and a part she was playing!
I posted about this in the "Off Topic" forum. I didn't even think about the "Wetlook" forum! Duh! :ohbruther:
I ran across this clip of Judy Carne and "The Amazing Kreskin" (a mentalist). At the cued up point in the clip, he's asking her about the water thrown on her on Laugh-in, and if there were any mistakes that never were shown on the air.
Of course not to be forgotten was the fact that due to an accident, she had to wear a metal cage over her head to keep from moving, for several months. It must have been terribly uncomfortable.
