Yep! He had finished a pie throwing demonstration on a (male) stooge. When he did the pie sandwich, it squished out and got all over him. He made a big deal of saying that he was sorry that happened, that someone like him "never" gets pied, etc. Then the whole chorus line of the June Taylor dancers came out and pied him, one after the other. When they were done, Jane Keane (Trixie) came out with a huge pie and dumped it on his head (iirc). It was pretty funny!
But the whole time he was doing the pie throwing demo, I was mad that it wasn't a lady that he was using for the stooge!
I had a really bad case of the flu when I first saw this and I woke up the next morning and thought I had dreamed it. It wasn't until years later I realized it actually aired.

Yeah, the guy who posted it (just the second half) was on a different forum. Big Jackie Gleason fan. Didn't care much for the UMD at all. ("Just porn" were his exact words.) When he started getting a lot of traffic from here, I think he pulled his YT account.
Anyway. Like most other male comedians of his time (Soupy Sales especially), Jackie was notorious for being "chivalrous" towards women by keeping them out of the messy bits... although he did pie his "wife" on the Honeymooners once. (Was that an outtake?) But that's why most of the folks getting pied over the years were men. The Jane Curtin one happened after he died, right? I always thought it was a great pieing, ruined by the absolute lack of any aftermath.

Yes, I believe that Jane Curtin clip was after his death. And yes, I would have loved to see some aftermath!
The Honeymooner's sketch was actually done twice, with 2 different actresses. And no, it wasn't an out-take, it was the punch-line of the sketch. Ralph & Ed were doing a Laurel & Hardy act for something, and they were practicing. When it came time for Ralph to pie Ed, he wimped out, and tried not to say the punch-line. Finally he did, but he ducked. In the mean-time Alice had come up behind Norton and was standing there. Ralph was so intent on really throwing the pie hard at Norton that he didn't see Alice standing there. So when Ed ducked, Alice got it in the kisser! Ralph and Ed did a double-take and looked at each other sheepishly.
The original, with Audrey Meadows, was part of the "Lost" Honeymooners sketches. I saw the original broadcast of the same sketch, but with Meredith McCrae as Alice, and never knew about the other one until it was "found" along the way.

Norman, do you mean the same Meredith MacRae from "Petticoat Junction"?

Ah, I'm just aware of the "lost" Audrey Meadows version. Not sure I saw the Meredith one.
And as you know, the Jackie skit where he pies his "stooge" before getting nailed was done twice, once in B&W and later in color.

I think it was Sheila McCray. I remember seeing it as a kid in the 60s.
It should be noted that Audrey Meadows mentions getting pied in her autobiography, "Love, Alice: My Life as a Honeymooner". She seemed to appreciate the comedy of it but vanilla cream burned her eyes a bit and understandably didn't enjoy that part of it.

Oops, thanks for catching that! It was Sheila MacRae, Meredith's mother! I was thinking of Sheila, but typed Meredith.
Those Jane Curtin pies are interesting. I used to think they were in see-through pie plates, but that never made sense since those tend to pop right off. Also the "crust" wouldn't be broken up like that if the pie plate was still stuck to it.
Here's my theory: Art director/segment producer/director/prop guy SOMEBODY threw together a couple of paper plate shaving cream pies and realized they'd stick on her face and just look super cheesy but with no time to go to the store and buy real pie shells what they did is tore up a brown paper bag and pasted these "broken crust" bits to the bottom of a couple of paper plates to make it read like a real pie-in-the-face to the camera. And it works, it really does.
So that's a first.
Also I'm a pretty big fan of the muffled: "Thank you"
Or not. Shit, I dunno. I'm Zaprudering this thing and noticing "crust" flying off on the hits. They're clearly paper plates with "crust" stuck to the BOTTOM of them. It doesn't make sense, your honor. Why would they make a "pie" with a paper plate sandwiched inside?
