Does anyone know of any good secluded mud within a roughly 40 mile radius of the Cedar Rapids area? Must be near a body of water.
The only mud I found is very visible, isn't very deep, and disappears during high tide. Google Earth isn't much help since most possible locations are too remote to get to or have houses near them. Yes, I know about the mud location map, but there's nothing in Iowa on that map.
I've generally had success by looking for shallow lakes or ponds in the spring/summer, then visiting in the fall when water levels have dropped. Often the water drops and reveals a lot of lovely mud, yet there is the rest of the pond nearby, or the stream that feeds it. It takes a bit of looking around though. Also, avoid treed areas, unless you like sticks in the mud poking you. We actually have a beach near here that has a clay area at this time of year, yet there are too many people using it to permit any mud-play without drawing a lot of unwanted attention.
Thanks. I've mainly been looking around treed areas and Cedar and Wapsipinicon rivers. I'll keep that in mind. Although I did find one location NW of CR that might have mud, it's the Lewis Bottoms Access Co Park on the north side of the river; there are 2 small ponds nearby that might have mud. I'll post a screenshot if I can. EDIT: Checked this evening, no mud at all. Must have just been old satellite data or shadows since it was in a depressed area.
Also, where do you park your car when you find a secluded place, I'd like to park in a parking lot so I'm more inconspicuous. I hate parking on the sides of 55MPH country roads.

UPDATE: I found some awesome mud today; it's in a relatively obscure place not many people go to, it's thick, but creamy in 2 depression spots, and pretty much waist deep in some places and I wasn't even trying to sink. I really wanted to just dive in and wallow in it, but it was an hour until sunset and it was a 30 minute drive there, and I have school tomorrow morning. The only disadvantage is that it's right near a little used boat ramp and an abandoned bridge that some people fish from at the end of a nice B-maintenance road. I am absolutely going back on Saturday to play in that mud. Now I just need something to distract myself for the next 1.5 days.

@muddy_clothes I definitely will. I also found another spot nearby at another boat ramp, but it looks like I can walk along the beach a few hundred feet out, then the beach/river turns outward in a way that blocks the beach from any view of the road or the ramp, and it looks pretty promising. The Google Maps satellite data in the area is a few years old, and pretty much all the water you can see other than the river isn't actually there. Will post a screenshot later to clarify what I mean and more pictures of my new mud hole tomorrow. Really hoping this second location I found has good mud that's actually secluded, because there was a guy in a Jeep TJ leaving when I arrived at the first spot yesterday and a guy fishing that got there a few minutes before I did, and that mud is in full view of the abandoned bridge. And I didn't even go in the depression spot with the water on top, I went around it so I wouldn't get too muddy on a school night. Also debating whether or not I should put it on the mud location map or keep it for myself. I'll hang onto it for now if it gets busy tomorrow, since tomorrow is Saturday.
UPDATE: Went to both locations today, boat ramp first, then bridge. Bridge mud was good, but too many people around and too visible. And it was the exact same kind of mud as the boat ramp mud. The boat ramp though, I was pleasantly surprised. It was clearly not used for a long time, and it was pretty far down a disused section of gravel road off of two other gravel roads that only have some traffic. The area I wanted to go had no good mud; just the area near the ramp. It was thick, knee deep, became creamy after wallowing in it, it wasn't visible from the road, and a car only came by twice in opposite directions and didn't stop.
Rolled in it, dunked my head, poured mud on my head with a small bucket, and pretended to be a little pig. It was great. Didn't get naked though, was worried about someone seeing me. Spent a good hour and a half there. Might go back tomorrow.
