Yeah it was a long time coming! I'm limited with my gameshow setups for showing any movement or full body shots (since, you know, I don't actually shoot on a Nickelodeon Studios set...it's all an illusion...). This approach is great for isolating and enhancing the messy visuals in a medium angle shot and that's always been my favorite thing to see...
The drawback, though, is losing some the natural qualities of the shoot. Like if you saw the new video--the way Sofia goes "uh oh, uh oh, UH OH!" before getting hit with the first pie--that wouldn't happen in my regular shoots. Or how she wildly plays around in the mess, at one point trying to stand up and ending up falling on her butt. Lots of great improvised moments like this when you go with just tarp on the floor and camera in hand!
At the same time, I was trying to take this amateur style further by getting multiple cameras and tightly editing them together for a dynamic viewing experience. I actually had the pies in one hand for smushing, handycam in the other, trying to capture a POV shot from the producer's perspective.
Amazing job by Sofia to improvise her way through it all, keeping it natural and upbeat. We have a second scene on the way and hopefully get her into a regular Pie Zone shoot soon...
