Us Brits are always pretty creative when it comes to scams.
When I was a teenager I remember that every day there was a man selling matches and pencils outside our local train station in South London. He appealed for sympathy by having a big sign saying "War Veteran" and dressed like a homeless person, so everybody felt sorry for him and gave him donations and bought matches and pencils from him. He got away with this for act for years, until a local reporter photographed him packing up and walking to his car that he parked at the back end of the railway station....and they took pictures of him climbing into his ROLLS ROYCE.
