Oddly enough I shoot non professionally with a go pro hero its mess proof and water proof as well , down side is the one i use doesn't have a zoom is very basic but still shoots 1080p video and has a 3 second photo mode too. Originally got it for shooting under water when i snorkel but it works good for this too.
Depends on what I'm doing. U know what they say about right too for the job.

These are semi-pro but are considered broadcast-grade by the BBC. I don't recommend this grade of camera for non-pro users though. You really have to know what you are doing with regards to shooting everything in manual mode, setting color space profiles, etc. Plus they use CF cards for storage, which are about a hundred bucks apiece
I'm editing the first 4K scene I've shot with the xt3 since grabbing it. Holy cow is this thing a BEAST. It'll do 10bit 4:2:0 log recording direct to memory card (as long as you don't mind ponying up for a UHS-II card) or 4:2:2 over HDMI to an external recorder. Up to 400mbps streams. It can do h.264 but for those 10bit files in 4K it does h.265 which take a LOT of horsepower in an NLE.
Panasonics: an HC-VXF990 and an HC-VX870. They are essentially the same camera and have identical sensors and lenses functioning in either full auto or manual focus/exposure/white balance - but the 900 has an eyepiece viewfinder. I prefer to use at least 2 cameras. Incidentally, although I put scenes out in 1080 HD I shoot them in 4K which gives me scope for cropping within the frame at the editing stage. They are superb cameras but I'm planning to upgrade these soon whilst they're still an attractive proposition to a secondhand buyer.
I started out with a pair of enrty level Canon Handycam and a Panasonic Lumix TZ30 (which still shoots extraordinarily good HD video - but only for short periods). Buy the best camera you can afford. As you use equipment you will identify its shortcomings and know what you need from an upgrade.
