Nothing has ever nor ever will top those pies. And, I am sure they were undoubtedly the most expensive pies possible.
I'm not sure about the Greta one, but the Redd video with the famous "freeze frame" was just whipped cream (although this might not be the same one you're talking about). The Tabitha video was a combo of bakery pies (I think) and simple CW and pudding filling. There were more runny than most (due to heat). They were solid, but I personally wouldn't call them the be-all end-all of pies. I personally think I've had better hits from time to time. (Again, your opinion may differ!)
I'm not a purist at all, FTR. I would actually argue I've used MORE different types of pies, more consistently, than any other producer out there. I used to average about 60/40 in favor of shaving cream... But these days, it's probably 50/50 or even 60/40 for REAL pies. Why? Because, honestly, the much higher resolution of HD makes those real pies look REALLY good... And the fake ones look... well... kinda fake.
SC still gives great coverage, but 720p has made me appreciate real pies more.
This might not amuse anyone besides me, but here's a rundown of ALL the pies I can remember using over the years. Maybe someone else should provide pictures to illustrate!
--Cool Whip in a (graham cracker) crust (henceforth called simply "crust") --Cool Whip in crust, with pudding filling (including banana, butterscotch, cookies-n-cream, tangerine, tapioca, etc etc.) --Cool Whip in crust with actual pie filling (cherry or blueberry usually)... Only used on occasion, as I've found these do not provide great coverage. Still, some really like this look. Shelly's first scene in SS133 has these. --chocolate pie... Secret recipe, but it makes for great sticky coverage. The Jen & Christine clip from SS100 has a lot of these. --marshmallow cream pie (sometimes colored)... Best coverage out there. Impossible to wipe off without hot water. As expected, models do NOT enjoy these near as much as the rest of you do! --bakery pie (Wal-Mart, etc)... Sometimes good, sometimes bad. Usually not worth the money. Rarely used. --Pet Ritz pie... Sometimes great (SS25), sometimes terrible (SS26). I did love these when they were still sold in the U.S. Similar to the McCain pie from Canada, which is the classic "YCDTOTV pie" from the early seasons.
--shaving cream in crust... Self-explanatory. --shaving cream in tin... Used rarely and for effect. (The "quad pie" with four tins stuck to every angle of a person's head, for instance.) --shaving cream in crust with pudding... Looks more real. Still not truly real. --shaving cream in baked crust... Looks cool as large sections of the crust will usually stick to the face. A lot of 1970's pies were this formula... Captain & Tennille pies and the Pam Dawber pieing, among many others. --throwing pies with crusts in tins (sometimes colored)... Easy to do. Usually I just watered down the shaving cream. --throwing pies in baked crusts (with or without pudding)... More work, but a better effect since the crust "explodes" on impact. These are your silent movie pies and Soupy Sales pies.
I've never done butter cream pies (expensive, and incredibly hard to clean up) or flan pies (wrong country). And I'm still bummed I can't quite pull off the current "Passa ou Repassa" pie formula. Otherwise, I think I'm set.
I can see I'm going to be vastly outnumbered here, but I MUCH prefer shaving cream pies. In fact, some of my favourite pies are the (much maligned on here) simple shaving cream on a paper plate pies. I don't care that they're not 'real', or that you can't eat them. Something about the look and coverage of them just does it for me in a way real pies very rarely do.
'Real' Cream Pies are Great - if they're done right (and we all know what I mean by that).
Shaving cream pies on the other hand are (in my mind) like people aren't even trying, sorta like we decided to "Make Do" or go on because "It's all we had".
But really... WHY can't we have more PUDDING Pies?!?!?!?!
Every Sorority Pie Throw I've ever seen/been too involved either COOL WHIP or PUDDING, and usually both.
I just feel it's an under-represented PIE type, and I hope others might agree.

I totally agree!
To me, pies are more than just whipped cream, or shaving cream, or fluff, or frosting; they need a filling. And as far as messy, pudding is fantastic! I use those a lot! I also enjoy fruit fillings such as cherry or blueberry. Those make a nice mess and add a touch of color!
As my long-winded post mentioned, I am trying really hard to add "fillings" into a lot of my pies... So the more positive feedback I get, the more I'll keep doing it!

I know that famous photo. But I was referring to one where Redd simply sits naked in a chair, although it's shot mostly from her chest up, and receives a series of ten pies to the face.
Tiswas used to use shaving cream for their custard pies which stuck to the body pretty well, also they used different colours too like yellows, blues and greens dye! You would get covered in these sort of pies quite easy.
Pastry I'm afriad are not as good as shaving and cream pies aswell I feel.
But I'd probably go for the cream pie myself, at least you can eat it afterwards!

Despite my love of real pies, you've summed it up for me much more succinctly than I could have!

I do have an appreciation for real cream pies in the traditional sense. That being said, I'm a huge fan of full coverage and contrary to Norman I love how shaving cream just stays on you. Seeing a girl transform into an unrecognizable figure gets me going and very few substances can make that happen better than shaving cream!
Not a fan of that type of shaving cream pie - the overly thick, fluffy kind on the bare tin. I like foam mixed with plenty of water to give it a whipping cream effect and then added with crust and real pie fillings. I love real pies but cool whip has lost its touch with me. In my last 3-4 shoots I used a lot of cool whip (per model request) and they came out great. Mixed with vanilla frosting or marshmallow fluff can yield great sticky coverage!
Wow, such great feedback! Since we haven't had any models give their opinion, I will give you mine and what other models have told us over the years. Every model we worked with prefers real cream pies over shaving cream, and you can add me to that list. The main complaints have been the stinging of the eyes, taste and it dries out the hair. All the pros of shaving cream pies really only favour producers who want the full coverage effect and easy clean up to set up the next shoot. That has been the reason we used shaving cream pies in the past. Nothing against the shaving cream fans and producers who use it, shaving cream does have its place in the wam world, but nothing can beat a good old fashion cream pie
I kind of go for shaving cream on a coverage aspect. But if the right ingredients in a real pie come together to create a sticky substance that has the equal stickiness and effect of shaving cream, I'll be all for it.
On a side note to Slapstickstuff, in volume 16 scene 5, those pies were sticking really well to your model, better than the usual shaving cream pies you had been using up to that scene. Was that just a lucky day or was it more than just shaving cream? Like every pie emptied perfectly and stuck to her face like glue!

Oh, the outdoor one? That was probably because I used to mix shaving cream with a little water, so it was more "soupy" and runny. For the outdoor one I literally had a few cans of SC and some crusts in my car, so we parked and made them on the spot. Pure SC is gonna be thicker, especially if you don't let it sit and use it immediately. (Downside: It burns more for the model if you don't let it sit.)
Ah that makes sense. I had the same luck with my partner one time. It stuck really well but she proceeded to freak out for a minute cause it somehow got in her eye after it was on her face for like 10 seconds... o_o She's a trooper lol.
I am 100% for "real" edible pie materials as opposed to shaving cream. I enjoy both watching & participating in WAM and shaving cream tastes gross if it gets in the mouth and stings if it gets in the eyes. I must add though that I am equally not a fan of just putting whip topping on a paper plate either as a pie is not a pie without some sort of crust. The ideal pie should be thick and creamy with a crumbly crust that will soak up the cream and get really sticky for maximum coverage. I think Lenny is pretty much perfect at pulling off really good "real" pie coverage...

Yes, but that's because the buttercreams are real bakery pies. And PRICEY. That's where a lot of your custom money is going!
I do like the look of those but supposedly they're murder to get off. We're talking dish detergent and solid scrubbing for 15 min. That's why I only use one marshmallow pie per shoot usually... It is SO sticky that even 2-3 per scene would basically be too much for any model. As is, a couple models have asked me after the fact NOT to use them again, so there ya go.
It's all about balance. I'm not gonna make it hell on a model just to get slightly better coverage. That's why I don't do massive amounts of shaving cream or incredibly hard-to-get-off pies. CW tends to be the best compromise.
And Trotter, I feel like I do compromise by mixing CW and SC pies in the same scene. I personally love the look of a couple SC pies (total submersive coverage) followed by a CW (which knocks some of the SC away but still leaves the model covered). I've tried combining both substances in one pie and it doesn't work. You lose the coverage of SC *and* the decent taste of CW. Worst of both worlds. I even tried mixing yogurt into SC... It didn't really work either. SC with pudding filling seems to make a pretty decent "fake pie."

I guessing that you didn't use real pies for this model!! I guess she didn't like the taste of your shaving cream pies!!
