Not all RAM is created equal. Some run in parity, some do not. What is the RAM speed, the pin configuration and type? DDR3? Chances are your old RAM is not compatible with your (new) memory. How old is the entire notebook? What do you use it for?
If you google the exact model of your laptop with "RAM upgrade", you should find what you need to know, including the maximum amount of RAM you can install, exactly what kind of RAM to purchase, and probably some places that will sell it to you.
If you know how to install it, you're already two-thirds there.
