For west coast people I just saw on COZI TV a 1976 Howdy Doody show where Happy Harmony gets a pie in the face. I was wondering if it comes on the West Coast at 11 am like it just did on the east coast here
Quick shot but great pie. I know this clip was on Hurley's clip list
Lenny, I think that was actually one of Hurley's list of lost pie scenes he was seeking. I remember seeing this at the time and thinking it was amazing. I dearly hope somebody caught it, and it would be great if someone could post it...thanks in advance
I hear you. Another one for me like that was the Wacky World of Jonathan winters. He posed the question "How great would it be if you could just hit somebody in the face with a pie when they annoyed you?" Then they did a series of scenarios including a couple hot babes...one saying " I never kiss on the first date" and a waitress saying something obnoxious...there were a couple outstanding ones...would love to see that scene again

There was something similar on a special program from the cartoonist Al Capp. He was a *very* conservative, traditional, curmudgeon (who did the "Lil Abner" cartoons). It was the late '60's possibly 1970. He was talking about things he disliked, and each type of person got pied. " ....Hippies" and a pretty lady with long curly hair got a pie full in the face. "... unwed mothers" and a cute pregnant lady and her boyfriend both got pied. The lady looked really humiliated and kind of looked down after the pieing. There were a couple of others, but these are the two that I remember most vividly.
At the time, when the mood of the country had gotten "serious" (the Viet Nam war, demonstrations, riots, civil rights marches, etc.), there wasn't much pie-throwing on TV. So this was fabulous, and his targets were very hot. Again, this was a comedy program, from his point of view. While I didn't agree with his politics, I loved the pies!
I had thought about this a little while back, and you reminded me of it, Fred. Thanks!
He also did a TV talk show in 1968 or 9 and in 1971. The clip you posted doesn't ring any bells, so I don't know if what I'm remembering was from a different part of the program, or from a different program.
That was kind of his "shtick", to complain about the younger generation, so it could have been from a lot of programs. I looked through youtube and didn't see anything that looked like it.
Hearing the old timers reminisce is fascinating... and frustrating. Cuz I feel like the chances of seeing these clips is about 3% at the moment! (FYI I've been waiting to see the Sesame Street "Surprise" clip for... 25 years now?? It's gonna be a letdown when I finally see it, of course. I don't care.)
I appreciate the work Hurley did, and I don't think he ever *deliberately* misled us, but there was at least one instance when his "Missing Scene" was a true Holy Grail... and completely made up. It was some Suzanne Somers special from the early 80s on a naval cruiser... Apparently SS not only got well pied, but Marie Osmond was on the show AND got thrown (face first) into a giant pie in tribute to "that" scene with her brother.
Sounds amazing, right? Especially with SS and MO at peak attractiveness, right? Unfortunately, Mark at WAMTEC *did* obtain this exact show, watched the entire thing... And there is NOTHING pie-related in it. :-S
Sometimes the memory is better than the real thing, I guess....
Well Rich, you actually unearthed a "lost" clip yourself and generously offered it free to customers... "The Roaring 20's" episode. There was a horrible quality snippet of one of the pies on a Hurley tape but you provieded the entire scene...pretty epic, too IMO.
So this Howdy Doody "lost" scene resurfaces...clearly in your 3 percent...did anybody catch it? Please post! Thanks.
porfle: Did any unfortunate or embarrassing mishaps ever occur during taping that didn't end up on the air? I'd love to see a "Howdy Doody" blooper reel.
Marilyn: All the time. So much fun. I'd love to see the blooper reel myself again. This wasn't exactly a blooper because the crew planned this trick on me but for me, it was a blooper because I wasn't expecting what happened...OK, the director, Errol Falcon, and the crew had planned this scene where everyone was getting squirted by Clarabell and they got to me and I said something like "I always like it when somebody else gets squirted by Clarabell!" at which point someone on the catwalk dropped a bucket of water on my head.
Ok, I was expecting that. What I was NOT expecting was that on the heels of the bucket of water dropping on my head, I was pounded with a pie in the face. Now, that expression was priceless! Guess they thought that if I knew it was coming, it wouldn't have looked as funny! Good thing I'm a good sport!
I'm not a wetlook guy but seeing her get doused way back then(1976?), got me stirred up. If I recall correctly, her character was never really in any funny bits so even seeing her get soaked was kind of shocking. The pie was cut out in the show back then; if it wasn't I may have had a heart attack.
