You don't need to install one. You can just use keepvid.com. Simply go to the site and cut and paste the link into the URL bar and hit the download button. It will give you several links. You should click the first one.
If you are able to use Firefox, the DownloadHelper add-on is fairly straightforward and easy to use; it doesn't work with videos that have been flagged (if anyone knows how to get around that, please let me know), but is great otherwise!
Beat me to it. It will try to install browser add-ons and crap, but if you dodge those... It's the most consistent thing out there. WAY better than KeepVid now.
The Firefox Download Helper does work better for other sites though.
It actually works and is entirely web based. It doesn't require any downloading of any software, doesn't require java, doesn't have misleading fake advertisements, and the resulting .mp4 videos are of reasonable quality.

Never knew about that one! The only caveat... And I know because I just tried it... Is that it doesn't download the highest quality stream. I actually like YTD because you can adjust the settings to make sure it always downloads the highest quality clip available. Now some users ONLY upload low quality 360p stuff, so then YTD is no help... But for the accounts that have true HD videos, this is a nice feature.
If you add the letters "ss" in front of the "y" in youtube in your address bar, it takes you to a web based download site that will let you save the video in different qualities and formats. They also make an app that you can add to your browser but it isn't required.
jdownloader (free open source software) will do it - once installed just copy youtube url to clipboard & jdownloader will add the movie to download list
