Before it became more easily available, Natrasol/gunge was always the fantasy and food was the reality of what i could splosh with. Don't get me wrong, i have had some pretty great times with food gungings...but overall proper natrasol gunge is my favourite. For me, the texture, colour and feel is just the best. And because (I think) a ot of my excitement around mess is rooted in seeing it on telly growing up, then natrasol ticks this box in a big way.
Still keen to try really smooth quarry mud, as a mate from here who definitely knows a thing or twk about getting messy swears by it. Had some very fun muddy times as a kid but keen to try the proper thick wallowing in clay experience.
From a practical point of view the most important two points are probably:
1. Gunge tends to form a slight film on your skin, needs a little more scrubbing than getting food off does, so make sure you've some shower gel handy for the clean-up.
2. With gunge, unlike dairy-based food, you can safely leave the room cleanup till the next day, it won't go off and start to reek the way things like custard do if not cleaned up instantly.
3. Freshly-made gunge is warm, which gives a very different sensation to being covered in something cold.
4. Gunge is much closer to the "TV-show" experience.
From a purely personal POV to me there's something slightly more primal about using food, even though gunge is very messy, somehow foodstuffs seem evben messier, if that makes sense? That's purely a personal perspective though, everyone will have their own tastes and take on it.

Such a great reminder on clean up and smell and how there is a difference

Oh hell yeah! That lingering smell issue is definitely worth considering. Especially since 'Original Source' have discontinued their minty conditioner...it used to be the BEST for shifting that lingering custardy on the turn stink....plaster it on thickly onto my thick hair, comb through and let it tingle. I remember getting home and my sis saying 'you smell nice and minty' when a few hours earlier I had been an unrecognisable custardy human trifle. I stocked up at Poundland when it was on its way out but that was many years ago and long gone!
My primary experience is with the MSGunge branded HEC from messy supplies. In purely practical terms, it is a lot easier to use and usually less expensive than food. A single pack makes 10L and if you're in the UK, shipping isn't a big cost.
I find it less likely to stain and a lot easier to clean than food. The last time I used it, we got it all over white towels and we just needed to rinse the towels and ring them out and they were white again. Didn't even need detergent. If you dilute it with water, it goes down the drain without an issue. The same cannot be said for oatmeal.
Also, if you want to have any sort of penetrive sex, HEC is a lot safer and easier than most foods, as it is sugar free. It's the same ingredient used in most water based lubes. That's a big one for me. The last thing I need is for my partner to get a yeast infection.
Also HEC is going to be more gentle on the eyes than a lot of foods. Again, it's a main ingredient in artificial tears.
As for body cleanup, it does take some work to get off the skin and hair, but the tradeoff is that it works as a moisturizing mask for hair. This also make it ultimately easier on my partner as it doesn't do any long term damage to her hair and she doesn't get chunks of oatmeal stuck in there. But invest in a loofah or shower brush.
Being able to mix it up warm is also a nice option to have, although if you're in the kind of situation where you want to torture the victim with cold gunge, you can easily let it sit overnight.
The main downside of HEC is that it's a little gross in your mouth. But if you have ever gotten water based lube in your mouth, it's basically like that. You don't want to lick a ton of it off your partner's body as it's essentially a fiber supplement, but eating slimy pussy/dick/ass won't hurt you. Again, if you like torturing the victim a little, this is a fun and safe way to introduce some unpleasant sensory play without any major risks.

I am totally here for this level of detailed gunge geekery
HEC and similar can feel great, especially with others. Though I feel because they're kind of "clean" and homogeneous like a gel, they don't quite give me that little "what the hell am I doing" thrill that mud or foods do. But it's still very enjoyably sensual.
Yeah I feel like this will not be as kinky as covering your self in bake beans, Mayo or eggs but easy and has an amazing feel. Me and the the mrs have 200litres to try so should be fun. I hope she likes it as she mostly only likes things you can eat but hopefully the feel of it and the ease of cleaning out weighs that.

Yes Quarry mud is on my bucket list or even nice smooth tidal mud. The mrs has has agreed to do mud, something we haven't done together yet but I'm struggling to find a good location, and I'm not wanting to do a ankle deep mud hole I want something at least knee deep and doesn't stink like arse. Want her to enjoy it.
The lucky people in the UK where your rivers run out on low tight and have the smoothest mud for miles on end.

Haha yep "what the hell am I doing" I think a lot of us on here have had that moment, but we keep coming back for more ahahaha

Gunge- the range of colours available alone makes it a solid choice, and the very neutral smell- I find the food smells get very overpowering. Some of the other gunges available (VIVI-extreme from Messy Supplies) offer something truly unreal in how they flow and behave.
Food items have some great merits too- gooey cream cakes are a lot of fun, and porridge oats add some interesting textures
Gunge is by far the easiest, for reasons pointed out by the likes of DungeonMasterOne and others; it dilutes into water and runs down the drain without leaving any sort of smell or mess.
Food on the other hand can be a PITA to clean up, is costly, and will leave a greasy residue.
I personally prefer food, because for me it is associated with a humiliation factor which is a bit of a turn on. Part of that comes from the textures, you can have silky custard, thick and gloopy porridge, baked beans.
It can be gross, it can be sweet and sticky... it's up to you.
Further, each item has a unique viscosity and appearance, which blend perfectly as they run down your body. With gunge on the other hand, you can have any colour under the rainbow and although you can vary the thickness, it is still a smooth fluid.
Together though... that's when the magic happens, nothing better than getting covered with food and then rinsed off with a bucket of gunge.
