98 years ago today, just around this time (12:30pm EST), a tragedy unfolded in the North End of Boston. A giant storage tank burst, flooding the streets with over 2.3 million gallons of molasses. The 25-foot high wave of molasses swept through the neighborhood, knocking down buildings, bridges, and trapping people and animals along the way.
I just wanted to take a moment to remember this event and the lives lost... some here might be thrilled at the thought of being covered in molasses, but this was truly a disaster at the time, and should not be forgotten.
On a lighter, note: This catastrophe led to many changes to building regulations that have undoubtedly improved construction standards across the country.
