Silly me got a computer virus today after many years of having been very safe online. It seems to just be scareware so could be a lot worse but any advice on tackling it? I've ran my computer's antivirus scanner (both full and the offline scan) and it's not picked anything up yet the pop ups remain. Should I fork out for a new antivirus? Should I take it to a shop? Burn the whole thing?
Side: ironically, after years of watching and downloading porn on sometimes questionable sites, it appears I didn't catch the virus from any of that, but rather a reputable, albeit minor, news site! You can't trust anyone these days it seems haha
What does the popup say? If you look in your task manager at the list of programs running, is there anything with an odd name? Sure you could fork out for Avast etc. But if you can get the name of the process and Google it, there might be some manual removal instructions.

This is a good idea but sadly it's managed to bury itself in my task managers background tasks. So there's already a lot of suspect looking cookie trackers and other stuff. But still, a good idea and maybe useful for other viruses in future
