Seeing a reference to GFAL in other threads, I thought it deserved a new thread.
This show had some great messy skits, the best known being the "Pie Chair". Unfortunately for some, most of the victims were male.... but that's still fun! Especially since the skits were usually quite inventive, with lots of build up to build the tension.
One skit I recall with fond memories is a skit the tested "women's intuition". Couples were asked to come to the stage, the pies were then wheeled in on a tray....creating a great reaction from the audience.....we all knew someone was gonna get it!
The women were then passed the pies and were informed that they were gong to have their intuition tested.
The guys looked nervous!
A contraption with two closed windows was wheeled onto stage and it was explained that the guys were to pick a window and place their face behind it and the women would throw a pie at one of the windows. The women were asked if they were going for a hit or a miss.
They both choose hit!
The guys were then asked to take their positions and it was explained that on the count of three the women were to throw the pies at their chosen window.
On the count of three one of the windows dropped, the pies were thrown......and the women's intuition proved to be very good indeed.... oh what a mess!
Another other one I recall... guys again. Was two "volunteers" were picked from the audience. They then have to run through an obstacle course, the last element being a pipe. The tall guy won.
It is then announced by Jeremy Beadle that just to make things more interesting the loser will pay a forfeit.
Then with much ceremony a tray of pies is wheeled in by Sarah Kennedy.... to howls of laughter from the audience!
They run the course again and although trailing the small guys wins and gets to pie the tall guy.
Jeremy then announces that there will be a 5 second handicap for the winner and they will race again.....but the small guys wins again and the tall guy gets another pie!
The tall guy now looks quite mucky!
The small guy gets a further handicap, but amazingly wins again. Another pie is dispatched.
The contest is now complete and the audience applauds. But then ass the guys are being congratulated for being Game For a Laugh, to howls of laughter an identical twin appears from the pipe!
The pies were usually yellow and very sloppy and messy! The pie chair was my favorite and I like the idea that it was always a guy and that they volunteered to take part knowing they would be humiliated in front of the nation during a prime time Sunday evening slot. The audience of adults would be cheering with relish as the guy received pies in the face.
This black and white image from Splosh! magazine was a publicity still from a GFAL segment called 'The Gloob Tube'.
It looks very interesting indeed and would be a great shot (regardless of whichever gender you were rooting for) if it weren't for the clean gentleman in the foreground making - as the saying goes - a better door than a window!
