My wife and I got up to some messy shenanigans last week, and instead of making my own pie recipe, I took the easy route and bought a couple of frozen coconut cream pies from my local supermarket in Massachusetts. The brand is called Crav'n, and my supermarket sold them for $7.00 apiece, which is only a buck or so more than what it costs me to make my own.
Defrosted for a day in the fridge, these pies were fantastic! I didn't take any video or stills, but I will next time we have our messy fun. They splatter and stick and offer excellent coverage. If you have these pies available in your local market's freezer case, give them a try.
I've always been pleasantly surprised with frozen pies as long as you thaw them fully. It's just the cost that stops me from using them more frequently
GFS has excellent frozen Pies. They also have Whipped Topping in squeeze bags and tubs. Its like a WAM paradise with huge cans of pudding and ice cream toppings. Huge bottles of chocolate sauce and caramel sauce. Etc.
Frozen pies are my top WAM substance and I've tried a bunch.
Marie Callendar's chocolate satin tops everything else in look and feel. Edwards chocolate and lemon creme are probably second.
Edwards berry cheesecake was kind of disappointing and Marie Callendar's coconut cream is middle of the pack because of its crust. I'd avoid anything that has toppings like Marie Callendar's birthday cake because they will interfere with the smashing. And of course lemon meringue are classically trash for face pieing. I've never even tried one.
But I haven't been able to experience any kind of banana cream or strawberry as they don't stock them near me. Hopefully one day.
