Can someone help me with food coloring that doesn't dye the skin? I'm looking for food coloring/ food dyes to color vanilla cake batter to make pies and slime. I am in the Los Angeles area of the United States so anything local would be preferred. I will post some results on my profile if things work out.
Tempura Paint (Children's Poster Paint) is your safest bet. Fully non-toxic, and its designed to be washable. It sometimes stains clothing, notably light coloured clothes or if you let it dry in- never had any issues with staining skin.
I don't have a brand for you since I don't live any where near your area. But for my recent experiments I used food dye on sugar basis. The cover on the package shows cupcake icing, so I think thats what they were supposed to be used for. I did a test on my palm and noticed it does stain my skin if directly applied. But multiple tubes of this stuff diluted in a bucked of slime did not. The ingredients listed are: glucose syrup, sugar, water; and for the color: brilliant blue, lutein, curcumin, real carmin.
It comes in tiny tubes in separat colors. They are highly concentrated, so much so, that one such tiny tube will paint an entire 10l (2,6 gal) bucket of slime.
As they are very cheap I reccomend you mix a small ammount of your cake batter with a bit of dye and do a stain test with this mix. But unless you want to cosplay a smurf, you should probably do this regardless of which paint you use.
