From memory it was a double glass tank. The idea was that there were 2 competing teams in each tank and they could see each other. Each team had to pump a handle to get to a certain pressure. Once one of the teams got to the required pressure it would release a load of gunge into the other tank, all over the losing team. I don't remember being able to see the gunge above the tank: it kinda got 'blown' in some how I think (guess that's what the whole pressure thing was about).
Bad Boys Inc were all in one of the tanks and I think it may have been three or four fans in the other side. Anyway, they all really went for it pumping the handle, but the fans got to the target pressure first and then the other tank just disappeared as all this gunge and slop sprayed in there. You saw Bad Boys Inc come out and they were covered and kinda wiping it over each others outfits.
It's a really long time since I've seen this, so my brain may have switched it around a bit, but I'm fairly certain that's how it went. I've been occasionally googling for it for literally years and has never come up- yet!
I remember that Disney show where they had to pump like mad to release gunged on the opposing team.
Talking about old forgotten gungings - kind of remember Jon Lee from S Club getting messy in an outside broadcast game on Live and Kicking. If I recall correctly he was in stocks and was wearing a puffa jacket. (Jon is always one of my fantasy gungings - would love to see him proper gunged wearing his check shirts, gold chain and gold hoop ear ring)

The gunging i remember was christmas day 1993. They appeared in the splatterdome. Literally got covered, lots of noise, check shirts etc. Its in the bfi archieve believe it or not! Google bfi etc. No one seems to have a clip!
