I am sure most of you already found this, but this was new to me. I only had the pie scene from the black & white episode of Ernie Kovacs...and I was not aware that in 1957 NBC made a color tv special of the Ernie Kovacs show, as a test, because this was one of the first ever broadcasts in color. In 1957 there was no such thing as video tape recording machines, because the first color tv recorders were not invented until 1960 (e.g. I have the Esther Willians 1960 NBC color tv special that was one of the first ever recordings on video in color). So, when NBC started test broadcasts in color they were only aired live in color, but were not recorded, so most color broadcast between 1956 and 1959 were ony archived as black and white kinescopes until color video recorders came out in 1960.
However, in this color transmission of the Ernie Kovacs show in 1957, NBC archived it on a color kinescope machine, which still exists today....and now I see they released this color kinescope and it contains an unknown (to me) pie scene where Mary Mayo gets pied...in color....so this is a keeper for me, cos this is the only known pie scene in color from a Kovacs show.
The color show is called "Saturday Color Carnival"..
Thanks for letting us know! I remember Ernie's specials on TV! I loved the whole thing, but especially his slapstick skits with the various beautiful ladies that he used!
My favorite was always the one with Jolene Brand walking over to the piano, saying, "John", and getting walloped with a fabulous thrown pie!
Besides that and the awards show where Jolene (iirc) was saying something and got hit with a pie and lost her wig, are there any other pie scenes on this that you're aware of? The color one sounds great, but I don't know if I want to spend $55 for one scene. (Even though I would enjoy the rest of the material.l)
Yeah, color kines are very, very rare. I have that DVD set but hadn't even pulled off the shrink wrap, much less checked it for wam. Not a great pie hit but of historical interest, obviously.
There's a Volume 2 of Kovacs rarities that I don't have yet ... any pies in the face in there?
