on 3/17, St patrick's day, I worked late and was on my way home from work. I take a back road through an Indian reservation. I have a rule of always leaving extra room and having a plan or an out...
On the way, I noticed an east bound car in the west bound lane passing other vehicles. I've sen that before and pulled to the right to avoid danger.
This time the car in front of me did not move out of the way in time, they were hit in the side, all thier airbags deployed. No damage to me or my truck a F-150. As i left the road, I slowed down then parked. I called 911, made sure the dispatcher had a good location and any other information. I was the only one who stopped too. I do hope the person who caused this mess gets caught. I will not settle for just having them pay a fine, they should have to pay the ladies to get their car fixed and for any time off from work... never mind if they have insurance... Having the drunk driver have to reimburse the insurance company or pay the true cost would send a message as would having to spend a few days riding with officers investigating crashes or accidents...
I have people pas me all the time thinking I am driving too slow or not close enough to the vehicle in front of me... when visibility is slow, I go slow.. also the faster I go the more room I will leave...that room must be there., I need time to react and avoid danger. Tonight that room gave me time I needed.
No one else was around. the ladies in the car were disoriented. I have a GPS, Delorme Tope on my laptop, it keeps a log of what happens and when. The police came and asked when the thing happend and how fast were we going. I was able to give them the exact time and speed. I also helped the officers figure out what happened. next I am getting a dash camera. they cost about $120 and the camera would have recorded everything.
making people pay a fine or going to court may not be enough. I think having people who get caught having to spend a few shifts riding along with the police who investigate crashes or "accidents" may help change their behavior.
I am also a private pilot. when you fly lou learn to always have an emergency plan..don't panic just execute the plan. Tonight that's what I did.. I cut the wheel to get me away from the oncoming traffic in my lane the should not be there, then hit the brakes to slow down.
I am part German and do like a nice glass of wine but not when I have to drive. I like being alert if I have to drive because if I am alert, the brain works faster and will et me out of toruble like it did here. If I am tired, I get out, walk around, then drive some more or find a safe place off the road, at parking lot, rest stop and get a little rest...
