So out of curiosity, has anyone here started using a drone to find mud or clay locations. With how cheap DJI drones are getting that can fly more than 30 minutes and are under the weight class limit for needing a license, it seems to be a great use of them. I have used google maps for years but the issue with satellite is they can be a year out of date or have not a high enough resolution to verify if the mud is good. I myself, have decided to get a drone this holiday season for next year and if anyone has used them, if they have recommendations. Was also thinking it might be fun to film some mud play with a drone as well
Drones are a great scouting tool, not just for checking mud either. Are there any people walking in the area? Want to check if the quarry car park is empty before you jump the fence?
Just a heads up some places use drones as a security patrol, so they can be a double edged sword in that regard.
If you're using it yo film, you can get some great shots. Make sure you have a rescue plan for your drone should it take a crash, less someone picks it up and recovers the video. (You can't rely on the delete function, a: crash might knock out the electrics so the delete command won't run, and b: delete doesn't remove/destroy the file- unless the file is overwritten most deleted files can easily be recovered).
Yep, drones are great for this. I've been using one for years and it's saved me many a jumped fence. I can vouch for the DJI Mini but I do wish it had better range and wind resistance. I've always wanted to film myself with one but it's probably a two person job, and unless you're in a completely secluded location, it might even draw some unwanted attention.
I've used drone (DJI Mavic Pro) on more than one occasion to scout, however I would not use one to film because the relative noise they make both might draw peoples attention but also covers other noises I rely on to detect if someone is coming over.
I would only use it to film if it was an already noisy environment or one where I am 100% sure no one will barge in on me
