Pretty straight forward, a partner of mine suggested getting down and dirty with some butter and maple syrup my concern is that butter is dairy based and I was curious if it would leave a scent? Would using margarine a better option? It would suck to have some one so into the idea only to have them turned off by smelling like sour milk or something. I greatly appreciate any insights.

i'm not the chief expert on using butter from a hands on wam standpoint. however from a culinary standpoint i do have experience with the science of how it works
usually salted butter can be out at room temperature for several days if it's covered before it starts to spoil. it is a dairy product so if you don't wash it out thoroughly from every nook and cranny you get it in, there is always a risk of a smell because the fat content in it oxidizing is what causes the stink but as long as you wash throughly in warm to hot water with a good soap or body wash it should be fine.
milk spoils faster because it has a lower fat content and a higher lactose content (butter is almost completely lactose free) that lactobacilus bacteria thrive on and end up producing by products that cause it to stink after 7-10 days on average
( tldr milk spoils faster due to being a better breading ground for bacteria, butter spoils from oxidization so it takes longer. wash thoroughly use a good grease fighting soap and make sure you get every spot and i think it should be fine)

Now I'm adding butter to my list of things to try after reading this
OK so you can play with it for a while before it goes off, unlike whipped cream. But, how "greasy" is it, how hard is to to wash off afterwards? Still have nightmares about the one time I used cooking oil.
