So I was wondering what a good custard substitute would be in the US. I want something in a large quantity that can be poured and gives good coverage, but is widely available over here. If I'm just always missing custard in the grocery store and someone knows where to find it, that works too.
Basically, what do Americans use instead of custard, or where can I find some custard stateside?
Custard in the UK, from what I can recall of my last visit (and from what I have seen in videos on here) tends to be runny, especially the stuff sold in cartons.
I have seen custard mixes at supermarkets here in Canada that, I assume, you could mix to whatever consistency you require.
What I like to use for my pies is pudding. Thicker consistency, more for slathering than pouring, but readily available and quite cheap.
If you can find a GFS store you can get 10# cans of pudding. It's thick and dairy based, but you can think it out with milk if you mix it well. That should give you that pourable consistency.
I've never done this myself, but I used to work in a kitchen where they would use 10# cans of tapioca pudding and cut it with heavy cream.
I'd suggest yellow cake mix. You can find it easily, and if you mix the powder with water (just water...don't bother with the instructions on the box), you can get whatever consistency you want.
