Hi, I've always loved the traditional American Banana Cream/Creme pie. The filling, the creamy top, the splat, the slophowever the fillings don't seem to exist over here.
I was wondering if anyone has any good tips for substitutes. Custard doesn't seem entirely right as it's too runny, shaving foam is too firm and has that alcohol sting usually.
I'm trying some 'Birds Dream Topping' this weekend, but the search continues.
This is something that we've always struggled with. We haven't mastered the craft yet, but we usually rely on Tesco's Extra Thick Double Cream or the equivalent from Sainsbury's, with some Angel Delight for colour. You will not have the same creamy splat effect as our American peers, but the pies do cover rather well.

Have used the Dream Topping before, does work a treat. But you have to find the balance between too thick and too runny with the milk, best to start too thick and add more milk to balance it out to where you want it.
