It just recently had my first wam experience and I just went to the store and bought a lemon meringue pie and some cool whip to get messy with. It went really but I'm just wondering If anyone knows how to make the best pies to get messy with. Something that's really creamy and won't get milky too fast. Do people mostly just use cool whip? Or does anyone out there have some good recipes

Cool whip is fantastic. It holds up beautifully. If you want to thicken it even more, blend in some canned frosting.
Another major advantage of cool whip is that it is pretty much non-dairy. "Real" whipped cream sounds like a good idea, but it liquifies back into just a runny cream very quickly. Also, it gets a "sour" smell to it after 20 minutes or so.
Cool whip (or the cheaper, supermarket brand "whipped topping") is essentially an edible oil product. As you play with it for 30 minutes or so, it liquifies into a pleasant smelling (and still pretty tasty) oil that has a similar consistency to coconut oil or suntan lotion.
Mixing with cake frosting, as someone else mentioned, will thicken it up a little, but I don't mind it a bit runnier, so I like to mix mine with the ready-made pudding. Again, it's mostly dairy-free, it replicates real pie filling pretty well (vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, there's even a banana cream!), and you can get it pretty cheap. I have sought out large cans of it, but I find the cheapest is the pudding cups at dollar stores. Two or 3 of the little cups added to a tub of cool whip makes for my absolute favorite pie.
I always recommend shaving foam for pies. It's cheap, versatile, easy to clean, gives good coverage and doesn't stink. A couple of tips before using it though. Sit the tin in a little warm water to expand the foam and get more out of it. Also, let the pies sit out for a few minutes so the alcohol evaporates off and is less likely to sting your eyes.
As a PS. A lot of American folk on this post mention Cool Whip. Does anyone know what the UK equivalent would be? I'm really curious to try a cool whip pie but we can't get it over here. Not even in American candy shops
If you're using a baked crust as a base, sprinkled it with sugar before baking. This gives it added rigidity if you want to slide the pie out of the tin.
For filling, I like three densities. A base with the consistency of custard, a middle with the consistency of a frothy pudding, and a whipped cream top.
The best pies are real. But a great (non-food) filling replica can be done with shaving foam. I recommend a non-menthol version.
For the denser base, I mix the foam with a mixture of water and Instant Clear Gel. A little bit goes a long way.
For a slightly less dense middle layer, I mix the foam with just a little water.
And then I top with just the foam.
What happens is the top foam layer gives a great splat. The middle layer covers the face. And the base layer clings to the crust so hangs on the face in big cracked chunks.
If the crust isn't that important to you, you can skip the base layer altogether. But I find without it, the crust doesn't stick as well to the face.
So I tried mixing the coolwhip with canned frosting and it did turn out a little to thick, but it looked really good and held up for a while. I think next time I am going to try adding custard and pudding to fill the pies! What kind of pie crust should I bake? Is it just the premade Gram cracker ones? Or should I look for a different one? or even make my own? Thank you for all the ideas, everyone!
I mix Cool Whip with Sour Cream. I know it doesn't taste great, but it's got a nice consistency. I was introduced to this combo many years ago by a long-time pie thrower.

I think the nearest UK equivalent is probably dream topping (the packet mix made up, not the squirty kind from a can)
