Here in the good ol' US of A, I find cake mix preferable. It's primarily sugar, so it washes off easily but can solidify to a nice thick consistency. Mix in a little pudding sometimes for a sheen and you have a great mix. Shaving cream pies are good in a pinch, but they just can't compare to batter or pudding!
Pancake batter is like flour.. it can be very troublesome especially if you don't do it right. It can end up stuck in your hair and lots of conditioner and a fine toothed comb are your only resolution. Cake batter is SO much better.. it doesn't get stuck and you can play with the consistency - make sloppy pies with thicker, thin it out and make a great slimy gunge, mix with other substances to be creative with the feel like whipped cream or shaving cream or even oatmeal... you can with pancake batter but its a very chalky feeling and if you intend on using sexually then you might want to add sugar to your preference or pancake syrup... it can be enjoyable but isn't what I would go to if I were to suggest a gunge especially when comparing it to cake batter.
As for crusts I've never used them.. it really would be more of a visual affect than anything in my personal opinion.
