A few weeks ago I uploaded some gifs and noticed something weird. When I click on a gif, sometimes it opens up but doesn't play automatically. Instead, I have to tap and hold it to make it play.
The new animated tag is a welcome addition but I'm afraid people are opening my gifs and thinking they're static images.
This could probably be a DM to Messmaster but is anyone else experiencing this?
This. Gifs are converted in mp4 files and are displayed inline, this is to save storage and have them load more quickly. How they appear is down to how your browser handles video.

Ah, gotcha. I mostly browse on my iPhone now and I guess it doesn't play nice with Safari.
I did notice you raise the idea of being able to upload mp4s instead, I totally agree with you there.

I definitely miss the old gif function but understand the file size and performance impacts that it had. Even sites like redgifs and Imgur have gone to mp4 or webm but preserve the animated gif format too, just not by default. The mp4 function doesn't seem to work on iPhone here tho (even tho other mp4s do.) I've also noticed a general slowness on iPhone that doesn't exist on desktop safari on macOS

Okay well I'm glad it's not just me. Thanks for the info.
