Judy something-or-other. Early 80s sitcom. Your clip is pulled off one of Hurley's VHS cliptapes. (Or pulled off a different YouTube user's clip who pulled HIS off a Hurley tape.)
The actor is Johnny Haymer, from M.A.S.H. And a couple more things., The show is Madame's Place, starring that damn puppet. Ran for one episode. This particular clip was ripped directly off Hurley's Clip Tape #14. A solid cliptape, with some rare soap opera pies, Japanese clips, and a Sesame Street clip of Linda getting nailed, among other treasures.
I don't think Hurley owns the rights to any of the clips on his clip tapes- therefore it's really not possible to rip off Hurley since he himself ripped off dozens of television networks and private video owners. I mean, let's call a spade a spade here.
I meant physically ripped, as in "ripped from a DVD."
But sure, the stuff about Hurley is 100% true, and to his credit, he saw the writing on the wall and bailed out a good ten years ago. Wherever he is, I doubt he cares about people picking over 15 year-old VHS tapes for parts. Hell, there's a couple 100 of my clips on YT right now without my consent, and I've stopped caring, and I OWN those copyrights!
And let's also be honest... Taking previously uploaded content from "dozens of television networks and private video owners," re-editing it down to 10-second clips, uploading said clips to your own channel, and earning money off the ads YouTube shows is absolutely no different than what Hurley did.....
...Albeit a more time-consuming and poorly-paying alternative.
I don't recall his videos having ads. Occasionally though the copyright owner will allow people to post videos as long as there's an ad before it. Though in that case the ad revenue goes back to the owner, not the uploader. Maybe that's what you're seeing?
I think some of my videos might have ads from that feature, but I don't personally benefit from them.
Also, with the amount of copyrighted material we all upload, there's no chance YouTube would allow monitization.
YT absolutely monetizes. It's the reason you have people who make a very nice living just making videos... If you put out a new video every two weeks and that video is getting a million views, you're doing well.
The money comes from the ads. Someone is getting paid... Either the uploader, or the person who didn't upload but owns the content.
Most copyright claims are automatic and are connected to the music, which is easy to spot via an algorithm. (It's also the reason the greatest compilation video I've ever put together can't be viewed on YouTube... The obscure 80s song I used is owned by a company that won't allow any of their content on YT.) Video is much harder to spot and rarely tagged, especially with super short clips.
I guarantee the creators of Madame's Place from 1982 are not scanning YT looking for a 5-second clip of Judy Landers getting pied just to claim copyright. That said, I don't think this clip is monetized, so either way.
