Followup to my previous thread on this subject https://umd.net/forums/3d-wam-gif I found out how to turn 2D videos into 3D videos using the method outlined here http://www.maximumpc.com/how-to-upgrade-your-2d-movies-to-3d/ The article says that VirtualDub is needed to save the AviSynth-ed files, but as Wikipedia shows https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AviSynth there are other programs that can be used such as TMPGEnc or Microsoft Expression Encoder (both worked for me). You can see the results below using red-blue 3D glasses (Google "how to make red cyan 3d glasses" to make your own). It works really well on mud videos as in the first gif from a Muddy Pinays trailer (3.8 MB). But I think the Great race gif (8.2 MB) could use some more depth. I'll play with the script a bit and may post more depending on results.
For code freaks, in that AviSynth script on the "ResW = videoW + (videoW / 100)" line, lowering that 100 to say 40 increases the breadth of the effect as seen in the two panel gif below (5.56 MB, altered code on right panel). The more I look at it though, I'm not sure that a true 3D effect is being achieved. There does not appear to be any accounting for depth in the code which is key https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2D_to_3D_conversion#Automatic_conversion Still, there's something popping in that Muddy Pinays gif! Maybe producers who use green screen could apply the effect on the model differently than on the added background. But a true 3D video really comes from a 3D camera, or by using two cameras side by (several vids on youtube about this technique).
Maybe someday I'll plunk down for a commercial product like this http://www.amazon.com/Movavi-Converter-Personal-Edition-Download/dp/B00VFYPNNO/ although I might be the only one really fired up about this, lol (unfortunately there's some other virusy products out there that one has to sift through). Also below is a test in black and white from the Three Stooges "Pop Goes the Easel" (4 MB gif) which looks pretty flat to me
