Today Is The Start Of The Long Road

Well it is the 29th of February and we have a very little amount of time before we start filming. The preparation of this film is the key. Every light, prop, item of wardrobe and nut and bolt has to be checked crossed checked and double-crossed checked. Six weeks on the road filming has got to be seamless and without hitch. Although we know there is going to be problems.

The film store has been turned into an unpacking and flight case preparation area of all the equipment. When you think about what we have to take with us it is like putting Elton John on the road. We have lighting, cameras, film stock, matte boxes to focus grips, Specialist effects - like smoke and lasers to wardrobe, make up department alone has a complete part dedicated to it. Then there is the transportation of the equipment. Tents to buy so we can have somewhere to eat and put equipment and have changing rooms for the actors. We have to set up a complete kitchen for food as we are going to be on location for fourteen to fifteen hours a day, some where for people to sleep.

Do we have a massive crew no we dont. ..

Marielle will be driving one car with a loaded trailer and I will be driving the other. Most of our crew are not being paid they are doing it for the love or experience of making a film, so they will turn up on site as and when they are needed. We have a child minder who will be entertaining our kids away from the filming. To them I guess it is going to be a massive adventure sleeping in tents in the desert and strange locations, whilst their father goes grey ages by ten years and takes his stress levels to an unknown territory.

We have now been warned about security, because we are shooting in the Almeria region, where Spielberg shot Indiana Jones, we will be very close to Morocco and a lot of the Moroccans have moved over to Spain but dont have work so we could face a security risk as well, but with nearly five million unemployed in Spain crime has began to climb, not just with the Morrocans, so we are going to have to be hot with the protection of the equipment.

Some of the locations are going to be very inhospitable, there is a sequence in the dessert as we are filming in the only dessert in Europe and yes it does have scorpions. When we were researching the locations we stayed in a little villa and when I went to bed the first night there was a scorpion in my bed, all be it a small one, it still was not pleasant. Snakes are the other factor we have to worry about, apparently there is a snake that we have to carry a antivenin for, it wont kill you but makes you pretty sick, and here was me thinking Spain was a safe place.

But then again, the light here is fantastic and we are certain to get some pretty spectacular shots.

Just picked up the medical supplies from the Pharmacy, we have got everything from a bandage to Imodium, thank god I am a qualified First Aider, to quite a high level so there is nothing we cant deal with on location, Hopefully we wont need any medical care but there are some ambitious shots where I will be suspended very high from a rock face, but then being the First Aider if I fall I will have to treat myself. Not good, must review a second medic.

This Monday 5th March more lights arrive and more boxes of equipment, so I will take a few pics and may do an unboxing film for the Youtube channel which we hope to have up and running very soon.

I hope that with these blogs people really get behind the concept that we are actually doing this film on a shoestring budget yet proving that anything is possible if you have determination and tenacity.

This film is not just about us as film makers and creatives it is about you the audience, without an audience our film will be nothing, that is why I love the concept of raising money for the production through the indiegogo web site. It makes the film feel almost like a cooperative, for as a little as few dollars paid through paypal, you have become an integral part of the film production and part of this growing family.

We will be submitting the film to a indie film festival in the United Kingdom as well so we might organize a private screening for all our UMD sponsors, keep you posted on that one.

Well thats the blog today; keep on reading, keep on following.
