Anticipation can be both a good and bad thing. The squirming of a first-time gungee as they await the inevitable gunging is often entertaining. Of course, the other side is feeling overpowered by the nerves and pull out of something.
Nerves and excitement are good. I've been around for too long to count, but it's rare for there not to be nerves before an event or session (not that I've had one of the latter since COVID...) In both one on one sessions and group events, everyone wants everyone there to have a good time.
At events, just be open with people, watch for a while and don't be afraid to ask (writes someone not exactly known for being chatty...)
Over the years I've had sessions planned to quite a high detail, through to one where all that was planned was that I'd wear no less than speedos! Of course, you need to have confidence in who you're sessioning with to take the latter approach! It's better to over plan the details of a session and use games of chance to decide who gets the mess.
When it comes to sessioning, if unpredictability is desired, simple games such as turning a card and lowest loses, or rock, paper, scissors are simple and work. A quiz, on the other hand requires more work and often ends up either too easy or too hard.
Anyway, this little blog post has come from what's happening over in the WAM Games group, where I'm going to be sent to a number of games. It took a while for a loser to be chosen and that was bad enough on the anticipation front, now I'm waiting to learn which games I'll be sent to. The two of us had a few chats, so as well as two games I have to join, there's also another two from 4 options and that leaves another two with a free choice as well. Of course, the nature of the games means this could go in many directions and I suspect I'll be nudged out of my comfort zone. But that was really the idea behind the intial post.
Of course, sticking up a blog about it is probably only going to draw attention to the WAM Games group and may well lead to more worries and nerves. I'd stick in a "if you quote this blog..." line, but I think I'm in enough trouble as it is!
Not sure if you can comment on blogs, but if you'd won the game which WAM Games would you send me to?
