Splash padBy Krazy_Kyle syntheticPosted friday 8 views
It was another blazing hot summer day, and Jacob had agreed to take his kids to the local splash pad.
His plan was to find a nice patch of shade, drink an iced coffee, and supervise from a safe distance. He was wearing a fresh green polo and dark shorts, determined to maintain some dignity and stay dry while the kids turned into wet, prune-fingered otters.
The kids, however, had other plans.
Within minutes, they'd found their first target: Dad. One sneak attack with a well-aimed spray toy, and his meticulously planned 'dry' day was over. Recognizing defeat, Jacob kicked off his flip-flops and stepped onto the wet, colorful concrete. He was barefoot and already half-soaked, but he'd forgotten how much fun it was.
The biggest challenge of the park was "The Bucket." Every five minutes, it would slowly fill with water until it reached the tipping point. The children knew this and had learned to clear the splash zone just in time.
Jacob did not.
He was jogging through a small fountain, looking down at his feet and laughing, completely oblivious as the giant bucket above him gave its final, ominous creak. The sun caught the water just as it tipped, creating a massive, sparkling wall of water right behind him. He heard the gasps of the surrounding kids a split second before the cold deluge hit him with the force of a small tidal wave.
He emerged from the waterfall, gasping for air. His shirt was a dark, sodden mess. His glasses were completely fogged and smeared. His neat, combed-back hair was plastered flat to his forehead. He looked up, squinting through the water on his lenses, and finally saw his kids pointing and howling with laughter from a safe, dry distance.
He couldn't help it. His initial shock turned into a deep, genuine belly laugh. It wasn't the calm, shaded afternoon he'd planned, but as he wiped his glasses and watched his children chase each other through the spray, he knew it was a much, much better one.
He was a mess, but he was the happiest mess in the park.
