hi so i've been trying to make the perfect slime (for me) and figured i'd write down what I've tried here to help out anyone else who wants to make the same. Picture of all of these can be found in the "slime tests" gallery on my profile (
https://umd.net/profile/i/indigoodragon/section/photos/album/slime-tests), and videos can be found on my twitter (
https://twitter.com/indigoo_dragon) (send me a note if I don't approve you in a day or so)
Materials and Mixing
I'm partial to Hydroxyethyl cellulose-based slime (HEC) so that comprises the base of the 5 slimes tested here. I used the following two types:
Tylose HS 60000 from
chemistrystore.com
"Untreated HEC" from
messysupplies.com
I also experimented with adding some polyethylene oxide in the form of lube powders:
K Lube - primarily Polyox based with some dispersant
J Lube - 25/70 polyox/dispersant split
PolyOx WSR 301 - raw polyox. While cheaper, you don't actually want to use this by itself, you need something to temporarily inhibit formation of clumps, which K and J Lubes both have. The usual recommendation is to mix it with a little bit of alcohol (isopropyl alcohol for instance), which I did not have on hand (this is also probably why k lube smells a little bit like a sharpie).
Coloring was done with Blickyrlic Student Acrylic paints from Dick Blick art supplies.
Mixing was done by using a paint mixing attachment on a drill in lukewarm water.
I was pointed to these materials and mixing method over on twitter, check out

Configurations and Results
10L of slime was made for each config here. I've listed the color of it for reference in the "slime tests" photo gallery.
1) 130g Tylose [turquoise] - Basic slime. Very smooth, good coverage, what I'd consider a moderate thickness, flows easily. No stringy-ness, would consider it "gloopy." Example picture:

2) 130g Tylose / 10g J Lube [silver] - Put a lil bit of lube in this one. It thickend it a little bit but to me it wasn't particularly noticeable. Mostly very similar to config 1 (turquoise) but maybe a bit gloopier. Example picture:

3) 130g Tylose / 10g K Lube [green] - Definitely my favorite of this round of tests. A bit stringy, still flows well and offers good coverage on the initial pour. Love playing around with this stuff. Example picture:

4) 130g Tylose / 5g K Lube [violet/purple] - A bit of a lighter version of config 3 (green). I think on this batch i used too little coloring. This one felt most like a thick drool, so if that's your thing, try this one out. Example picture:
https://umd.net/showpic/image/media%2Fphotos%2F9_21%2Fvlcsnap2021082914h19m26s363_uid_102825_163174584945783.png/return/%2Fprofile%2Fi%2Findigoodragon%2Fsection%2Fphotos%2Falbum%2Fslime-tests
5) 190g Untreated HEC / 15g Polyox WSR 301 [white] - So this one was a bit of a mishap. It turns out that you need to pre-mix a dispersant with the polyox to prevent clumping and I did not do that. I'd recommend actually using K Lube instead of a raw polyox powder. This slime was pretty good though. Very thick, doesn't splatter much, very heavy. Example picture:
https://umd.net/showpic/image/media%2Fphotos%2F9_21%2Fvlcsnap2021082914h06m35s712_uid_102825_163174584943101.png/return/%2Fprofile%2Fi%2Findigoodragon%2Fsection%2Fphotos%2Falbum%2Fslime-tests
And that was about it for this round of tests! I did re-do config 5 (white), and only have a short video from that on twitter (it came out *very* sticky, be careful with it because it requires a lot of cleanup).
Feel free to dm me with questions about these.
