Recollections and thoughts about WAM stories

This is pretty much my take on things, nothing official, just some musings while I had some time and inclination to actually write.

Over the years I've written a bunch of WAM stories under different user names, pretty much going back to the days of newsgroups (yes kids, years ago there really were such things) when I was in University and the web/internet was a new and shiny thing. It was back in this prehistory when I first came across sites like Messyfun and later Messygirl's v1.0 stuff along with other scattered little sites, some lost in the mists of time or now having outgrown their humble origins. It was fantastic finding out that I wasn't the only one getting messy in a shower from time to time as I was growing up, or getting turned on if a coed game of touch foot ball in a muddy field that turned tackle was also a turn on when you were rolling around in the mud with a girl.

Back then, in the world of dial-up it was always fun when in IRC you could find others with enough imagination to start into a messy pie/food/mud fight that would sometimes go into cyber. Text was king because pictures were film based, scanners expensive, bandwidth was minimal and the expertise level to do some things, like the cost, was high. The stories though always drew me in to one degree or another. Eventually in the newsgroup I got the courage to actually post a story (called Janet) and from there some sequels and started branching out. There were a lot of great stories that are possibly lost and buried under the sands of time in some digital archive, if they still exist at all. But the stories could run the gamut from simple little tales of a pie to the face and a make-out session, to filming a movie that involved vats of all manner of substances. Interestingly no one was *that* explicit, even if they were quite sexualized. Think the serialization of a letter to a porn mag years ago. It was someone's musings on what turned them on and it was great when you got encouragement, of course wading through the rising tide of spam in the newsgroups.

In a lot of cases, then, like now, it came from playing in the chatrooms/chats with people. It was a great way to be exposed to a variety of interests, tastes, combinations with other fetishes and even limits. It was inspiring and over time scenarios would build upon each other until, presto!, there was a newly formed story sitting there to send off to a site or put up in a yahoo (or equivalent) group. I was never really one for being trapped in a "mess A in scenario B while wearing C" type world. Part of what I really like about WAM is the flexibility it brings and can be applied to other kinks without much effort or thought. I won't begrudge someone if they only like one thing in particular, but it's not a view i like to share too often where the mess (real or virtual) is concerned.

Over the years I dipped a toe in and out of the writing process. I kept hitting a wall where the success would mean I'd try to write to a schedule at which point the process would just become tedious, repetitive and not at all satisfying. A few times I did do "custom" stories for people, but I found that while I didn't mind being inspired, I didn't want to have people expecting me to produce a product. I did want to contribute to the community, but not ever being fortunate enough to be dating a good looking girl that wanted to; a) be messy and b) be photographed while messy, meant that stories, words, ideas were all I could offer. I still do, part of the reason why I still write today, but when I feel I have a story ready to put out there.

Of course being into writing, then leaving meant that some stories are gone forever, given that this was in the age before lots of cheap memory sticks to put some text files on and you just had the 1.44" floppies where it was a pain in the ass to salvage anything off of them, assuming you still had a drive. For a while there though, the stories really fell out of fashion. They were relegated to a few newsgroups and a few incarnations of story archives and it was sometimes days, weeks or months before you might find something new. Pictures were now common, and king, video was becoming easier, broadband more accessible and stories were seemingly forgotten in the mix. It was great for those with someone who messed with to have the pics to trade/share, the money to join the sites or in a place where there was a good number of wammers close at hand to almost have that "community". For those that couldn't indulge often, for whatever reason, just liked to let their imagination run wild (for a while or just a "quickie") and put themselves in the mess stories were great and at least the flame was kept alive.

For whatever reason, it seemed to come along about the same time as the rise of the forums in the 2004/2005 era when people really started to consolidate and collaborate. I'm glad to see that to this day a lot of forums encourage stories with their own sections along with the return of the archive sites. It's good to see a range of stories (and can't complain about the bias towards mud) being published and even that they're working in other kinks left right and center whether BDSM, fetishwear or even furries. WAM is a great gateway to fun and ideas.

If you've read this far, I hope you found this interesting. I really didn't write this for any reason other than to just provide a high level look at how I saw things change over the years where stories were concerned. Not being a site owner or major producer, just a chatty, imaginative consumer who tries to give a sliver of something back it's a piece of the "community"'s heritage. In any case thanks for reading.
