A few years ago my workplace staged a charity auction. The idea was that people had to pledge money and nominate someone. The person with the highest number of votes would then have to get into a gunge tank, in public, with everyone watching. Except, we couldn't get hold of a gunge tank, so we had a bathtub, and it was about three-quarters full of mud! This event couldn't be sleazy in any way so the victim had to keep their clothes on. The interesting thing about this was that everybody (including me) assumed that it wouldn't be them, so had dressed normally. I was absolutely stunned to discover that I was the chosen one. Clearly people were keen to see a young girl suffer the humiliation of getting very dirty. I was wearing a blue shirt, smart black trousers and a favourite pair of black and white stripey socks, with a NEW pair of shoes! That was literally the first day I'd worn them!
I felt so scared as I reluctantly walked towards the cordoned off area where the next twenty minutes of my life were going to be dedicated to getting stuck in thick, wet mud. I couldn't believe what I was doing as I stepped over the side of the bath and lowered my feet into the mud. My lovely new ballerina pumps were slowly swallowed as I sank into the surprisingly deep and thick mud and I could feel it's slimy wetness all over the exposed parts of my socks. As I attempted to walk across the sticky mud I immediately left my shoes behind, such was the suction! I cringed as I felt my socked feet leaving my shoes! I kicked myself for not taking my shoes off first, I should have just got in with socks on! It was a truly surreal moment as I briefly caught a glimpse of my lovely stripey socks just before having to walk into the mud in them! The smart, jet black toes almost looked forlornly up at me as they were engulfed in the ooze! I couldn't believe I was in there with no shoes on, it felt so utterly wrong and strange, but what a fool I'd been to think my shoes would stay on my feet in what was basically eighteen inches of sucky brown glue! Then I was ordered to sit, and eventually lie down in it, and roll around like a pig. I was covered in shiny brown mud from my hair to the tips of my socks. And, never having done anything like this before, it was totally shocking. I couldn't believe the state I was in as I slopped about on my hands and knees trying to find my brand new shoes in the mud! But, I definitely enjoyed it. It was very liberating to be so nicely dressed and covered in mud, in front of everyone. I had so much fun squelching about! It certainly started something for me!
