Easter Brunch

The Easter brunch had been a polite, sun-drenched affair, filled with the smell of lilies and the sound of distant church bells. Jacob, dressed in a sharp teal polo and charcoal slacks, had spent most of the morning navigating the family gathering with practiced grace.
But as the afternoon progressed and the Texas humidity began to settle over the patio, the "kids' table"--now mostly comprised of teenagers and cousins with a streak of mischief--decided the celebration needed a more dramatic finale.
It started with a playful dare near the pool's edge during the annual egg hunt. Jacob, ever the good sport and perhaps feeling the heat more than he let on, didn't back away when the group began to chant. With a laugh and a mock-serious salute, he decided to bypass the hunt entirely.
"If I find the golden egg at the bottom, do I win?" he joked, before stepping calmly into the shallow end.
The water was a shock against his skin, turning his polo a deep, saturated navy and making his slacks heavy and dark. He didn't just stop at his ankles; he waded in until he was waist-deep, his leather belt slick and his shoes surely ruined. He climbed out via the metal rails, dripping onto the hot concrete, a wide, genuine grin stretching across his face. He stood there, a soggy but triumphant center of attention, proving that even a formal Easter outfit was no match for a good-humored plunge.
