David always seemed to attract the chaotic element, even on a perfectly normal Tuesday. The plan was simple: meet his brother and some friends for lunch, then perhaps a quick coffee. He was dressed slightly up for the occasion, crisp maroon button-down shirt and pressed navy trousers, a rare break from his usual worn jeans and graphic tees.
Lunch was fine, but the conversation lagged. His brother, usually the life of the party, was unusually quiet, nursing a soda. "Everything alright, Ben?" David asked, noting the strange smirk playing on his brother's lips.
"Yeah, perfect," Ben replied too quickly. "Actually, why don't we walk past the community pool on the way back? Nicer route."
David shrugged, suspicious but compliant. The sun was intense, reflecting brilliantly off the turquoise pool water. They paused by the edge, David still questioning the detour. Suddenly, the silence was shattered. Without a word, Ben gave a massive, grinning shove. David, completely caught off guard in his slick dress clothes, didn't stand a chance. He went down with a spectacular, awkward splash, the pool swallowing his carefully chosen outfit.
He emerged sputtering, the chlorine stinging his eyes, only to find Ben and the others howling with laughter. David had to laugh too, realizing the lunch lag was just misdirection. Shaking off the worst of the water, and realizing his phone was thankfully on the table at the restaurant, he decided to lean into the surprise.
Later that afternoon, after changing into an emergency pink shirt and deep indigo jeans borrowed from Ben, he emerged again. He had tied his wet, long hair back into a bun and looked remarkably unbothered, smiling as he navigated the shallower end with the ease of someone who had just survived the most stylish shipwreck in pool history. He had just adjusted his wet bun when his brother walked up, phone in hand. "For the memory bank," Ben said, snapping a photo of David's triumphant, casual, fully clothed victory.
