Aaron and the Silt

Aaron had always been the "safety first" guy in the friend group, the one who carried a backup battery for his backup battery. So, when the annual charity mud run rolled around, he showed up in pristine, tan tactical gear, convinced he could navigate the course using "superior foot placement" and "strategic pathing" to stay dry.
He managed to keep his composure through the first three obstacles, nimbly hopping over logs and dodging the spray of more reckless runners. He was actually winning. But at the edge of the "Slough of Despair," his strategy met reality. A younger runner, fueled by pure adrenaline and zero coordination, lost their footing and lunged toward Aaron for balance.
The collision was perfect. Aaron didn't just fall; he performed a slow-motion, back-loading descent into the thickest, chocolate-pudding-consistency silt on the property. When he finally stood up, his tactical tan was gone, replaced by a uniform coat of sludge so thick it added five pounds to his frame.
The smirk on his face wasn't one of defeat, though. As the cold mud began to dry in his hair, Aaron realized he'd spent thirty years being careful, and this was the most fun he'd had since kindergarten. He didn't even try to wipe his face; he just stepped deeper into the muck, ready to finish the race as a human mud-pie.
