A surprise to be sure, but a welcome oneBy ThatsSoPoolPosted 8/23/20 531 views
A few months ago I found a website where you can see radar images of where it rains. All the way from about 3-4 hours ago, right up to about five minutes ago. Great if you want to "accidentally" get caught!
This Friday afternoon I was checking the website and saw that a large amount of rain was sweeping across the country. Based on the movement of this rain front, and its distance from me, I estimated that it could potentially reach me later in the evening.
I kept checking periodically and around 22:00 it was very close. It was time to head out! I was wearing a black tshirt and black jeans, which I had changed into earlier. I prefer to head out when it's darker so that other people won't notice me as much, and darker clothes help with that. I was also wearing black socks and whatever underwear I happened to be wearing at the time, which were a light blue colour with a white elastic waist band.
I put some shoes on, deliberately choosing the pair with the tops that are made out of cloth which offer basically no resistance to water whatsoever. Once I got out a light rain had already started and I headed north. A few hundred meters that way there are a couple of football fields and what I think is an office building. This time of the day it's a very quiet area. Someone might come along walking their dog or riding through on their bike but otherwise it's empty. I was thinking that once the heavier rain came I might even be able to lay down somewhere where no one could see or find me.
I was checking my phone and it looked like the heavier rain was about 15-20 minutes away. Not wanting to just stand in one spot for 15 minutes and risk looking suspicious, I started to walk around the area somewhat randomly. Unfortunately the rain this evening was quite disappointing as even after I had walked around for some time it had never really picked up and I was only a bit damp.
But as I was walking along the chainlink fence along the outer long side of one of the football fields I heard a noise on my right. There, out on the field, was a water sprinkler. A big one. It was shooting a single great plume of water out at an angle as it slowly rotated around. The water reached several meters into the air and far out from the sprinkler base. I was excited about the idea of playing around and getting wet by the sprinkler instead, as the rain wasn't going to get me as wet as I wanted. I rushed around the fence to the other side, hoping that I could get onto the field itself where the sprinkler was. But it wasn't to be because the gates had been locked! Damn! But then I noticed that this sprinkler wasn't in the center of the field but closer to the side I had previously been on. I thought that perhaps some of the water would reach beyond the fence where it could hit me.
I once again rushed back to where I had been and waited for the sprinkler to rotate around. I stood where I believed that the water would first be able to reach and then I planned to walk along the fence as it rotated until it would no longer reach me. I thought that as it was quite far away very little of the water would actually reach me. I was wrong. When it hit me it was like stepping into a very powerful shower, or being sprayed by a hose. Instantly the right half of my tshirt was soaked and I could feel the water rushing down my legs and into my shoes as I walked along the fence. While I waited for the sprinkler to come around a second time I marveled at how wet I was already. Parts of me were still dry though, and we couldn't have that of course, so on the next rotation I made sure to spin around as I walked so the sprinkler could drench me from all sides! This made me fantastically wet! I don't think I've ever been this wet outside of my own home before! I was able to do this a further 2-3 more times before sadly the sprinkler system switched the active sprinkler to one that was further in and didn't reach out beyond the fence at any point.
I was still really pleased with myself. My tshirt was clinging to me, my jeans were soaked, and my shoes and socks had enough water in them to make slight squelching noises as I walked around the area a bit more to dry up before finally heading back home.
