I thought you might like to hear about the time I went into mud with ALL of my clothes on! There was a really muddy area at the back of my work, being developed. it was basically a building site. And I went out the back door, and got locked out! So I had no choice but to go across the mud to "escape". I was a bit concerned about my clothes, but it didn't look too deep (how wrong I was!) I was dressed smartly for work with my nice grey trousers, a smart top and a black cardigan over the top. My shoes were cute little slip-ons in the style of ballet pumps. Because it was December I was wearing black socks, with reindeer on them and amazing bright red toes and heels! Who doesn't love Christmas socks?
Anyway, I started making my way across the mud and it slurped and squelched up the sides of my shoes and I could feel it getting onto my amazing socks a bit!
And you know what? It was REALLY DIFFICULT to keep my shoes on, it was so thick and sticky! At one point my left foot came right out of my shoe, but I managed to save the situation without putting my sock down in the mud!
Things took a big downward (literally!) spiral after a few steps. With no warning apart from a loud burping sound, my feet disappeared and I quickly sank up to my knees in this slimy brown hell! I was so shocked as I stood there, but I couldn't help having a little giggle to myself! Here I was, knee deep in cold slimy mud, in a pair of trousers that I'd owned for one day! I tried to continue, and although I seemed to be able to move my feet, they were definitely moving independently of my shoes! They were stuck fast! The only way I could proceed was by popping my feet out of my shoes and continuing my journey through the mud in my beautiful Christmas socks! I took a last look at what was left of the brightly coloured socks before wistfully lowering them into the glutinous ooze. Although it felt pretty gross and slimy to be in the mud with my shoes off, it was instantly much easier to move around! I wiggled my toes, feeling the cold slimy mud through my socks and had another giggle to myself at the sheer daftness of splashing around in the mud shoeless. At this point I think I decided to have fun and actually did a bit of squelching and wallowing around, feeling the cold ooze plastering my smooth, thin socks!
Amazingly, it got even deeper! I was very near waist deep and had to get onto all fours and kind of "crawl" across the remaining quagmire! When I finally got to the other side, I was dirtier than I've ever been in my life, pretty much covered in slimy brown mud from the breasts down! I have to say, wading through mud in socks is not good for a girls toenails! And I didn't get my shoes back, they were lost forever! The weird thing is, the whole experience was actually rather fun.......! I travelled home singing "Mud, Mud, Glorious Mud" to myself before spending what must've been HOURS cleaning myself up! My washing machine had to work very hard on those clothes, I can tell you, but everything (socks included) survived!
